Trouble shooting the drivetrain

Hi, Im relatively new to the forum and this is my first post. I am currently having an issue with something in the front half of my drivetrain. (forgot to mention i have a 2003 Evo VIII GSR). I thought i narrowed it down to worn out CV joints but i ended up JUST replacing both front half axles and im still having the issue. What is happening is at very slow speeds, during any kind of movement in the steering wheel (more so with extreme left or extreme right) something is clicking really loud and the wheel is seizing up, not moving freely at all (to the point where the back wheels hop). this is happening on both the left front and right front. I did quite a bit of research and everything led me to believe it was a shot CV Joint, but now im not sure. Transfer Case maybe? ANY good advise is more than appreciated. If any body can lead me in the right direction that would be AWESOME! Thanks

Just recently had a local guy here in NC state the same symptoms. Ended up being transmission related, it would pop pretty loudly when doing lock or near lock turning. Bought a used transmission from a wreck and Shep transfer case and no more problem. When taking his transfer case off we obviously had to drain the fluids and they came out good, when draining the transmission the magnetic plug came out looking like a chia pet! The fluid literally glittered in the drain pan. Sorry for the bad news but I hope this helps you out. BTW his was caused by drag racing and launching with a ACT 2600 unsprung clutch.

Clutch and flywheel are probably still fine as long as it was not slipping, which, if you just installed it, it should not be. it's an Evo so there is no 100% on anything, I would recommend having a reputable Evo shop take a look at it and let you know. new or rebuilt transmission OR transfer case. Check out the Bushwacker service and the Shep upgrades. Decide accordingly. For me it would just be an excuse to upgrade, for you it may be a pain in the a$$. Especially dealing with shipping to and from Hawaii. Good luck getting it sorted out, I hope you have a few friends to help you with the tranny removal if you decide to do it yourself.

sounds like something is wrong with the center diff in the trans or the front diff in the transfer case. easiest thing to do is like jmelocik said, drain the trans and check fluid condition.

bear in mind though, the trans shares fluid with the TC front diff. the fill and drain on the TC itself only lubes the ring and pinion in the TC.
