Clutch problems? Or Tranny?

Hey guys,

Last week at the track I noticed something wrong with my fourth and fifth gear. On my last run while shifting, at 7 grand, in to fourth it ground pretty hard then eventually went in and the same for the 5th gear. Right when each grinded I hesitated a little bit then it went fully in gear. The next day while driving to work I had to accelerate on to the highway quickly. As I was going into 5th gear it ground again. Now while just doing errands sometimes I get the grinding...but just going into 5th gear.

My 03 Evo 8 has 41k on her and I had the 30,000 service done and I'm diligent about routine maintence. I have the following mods on the car:

Injen upper and lower IC piping with intake
evo 9 bov
ams MBC
walboro fuel pump
JGT turbo back
and ams tuning to 24.7 PSI. putting 305 / 307 to the ground.

I'm assuming that its the clutch starting to go, but I'm not sure. I'm looking to purchase an Exedy twin disc clutch to save my tranny in the long run.

Any suggestions on what this problem is? Cluch starting to go? or is it my tranny that needs the work?

Its the tranny. The syncros are bad, get a tranny rebuild. I first thought it was my clutch too, a relative of mine whos a Lead Tech says changing a clutch won't stop the grind. After my tranny rebuild, the grinds where all gone.

If the clutch is too thin it will disengage more than it has to (and make it easier to shift), but in this case you are grinding, so I'd say it's the synchronizers on 4th and 5th.

My 3rd and fifth did the same, then I got the Bushwacker rebuild which fixed all that.

If you havent changed fluid lately and you've been doing alot of racing you can try changing it again. You might be able to prolong having to do the build for a little while.
