You would probably be very surprised how little variance it takes to drastically alter the performance/effect of aerodynamic devices.
Grant it it's at a totally different level than your average streetcar/racecars but, we fight everyday for something as small as .010" on things like splitter height because they are that critical to the aero balance of the car.

I tried yesterday with wing and without.
With wing 253km/h without 258km/h (161mph), it's about 3mph difference. Without wing was car after 230km/h+ much harder to drive, not recommended for newbie.

If you read up on the changes between the VII and VIII (&IX) the differences in aero parts are always increased in a more efficient way. The wing on the VII VS the VIII for example are improved aerodynamically, and not for esthetic reasons, as many people think. I guess that's the reason it's called an Evolution.
