How to talk a dealer down.

Guys,

I'm thinking about buying an Evo by the end of the year and I just wanted to know how to talk the dealer down. I read other topics about getting the price below invoice and stuff but how do you do it? Threaten to walk out or just keep on throwing out prices? I know there are some good ways to do it and I know this is maybe the best time to buy because of dealers trying to reduce the inventory so lets hear how you guys did it.

Thanks

I got mine for invoice. Really hard to do so, considering all I did was call up, say I had the money in hand to buy the car for invoice and for them to get the paperwork ready if they want to sell the car today.

I just walked in and said I know I can get the car for this amount no BS, and I named my price 28500 with sunroof and CFwing. Of course, the usual let me talk to my mngr. and where can u get it fot that BS, but roughly 30 min later and I was finalizing paperwork for MY price, including the amount I wanted on the trade in.Let me know if you need help, and dont pay more than 29000 or so for it. I know where some are.

Heh. I sell cars, theres no trick to getting a good deal.

Just present an offer and how your going to pay for it...
(Alot of people like wasting time, so you should offer to do a credit application w/ your offer if your going to finance)
It's really that simple.

28860 is Invoice w/ Roof and Wing
I would start lower and go to every dealer in your area with your set offer. Don't say 28500 to one dealer, they ok it...then go to the next and ask them to beat it. It really wastes our time. Pick an offer and find someone who will take it.

Evo

When I looked at an Evo, I was just window shopping and just wanted to sit in one. The first salesman immediately told me they do not allow test drive's, than another salesman asked me if I would like to test drive a BBY Evo, all they wanted was a copy of my driver's license. They must of watched me drive up in my GMC Typhoon. The test-drive is all it took for me to want one. I got a business card and went on-line to research the cost. On-line I came up with about 28k with the carbon-fiber wing invoice. The only color I wanted was Weight-Less White and without the sunroof. They really wanted my business, I wrote down what I was willing to pay/ down-payment and the offer was accepted.

The Evo's on the lot were going for 32k, a BBY, and Rally-Red. The Mitsu dealership had to go up-state and had to trade an Endeavor to get the car I wanted. There was only one WW Evo in the database that fit my criteria. They must of ran my credit with my DL, because they had already pre-approved my loan the same-day I test-drove the BBY Evo. It was so simple, signed the paper-work and was on my way home in my 2003 WW Evolution. Good Luck on your Evopurchase!

Edmunds has base invoice as 26,800 and the carbon wing is around $500. Where is the $28k figure coming from?

Another little FYI for those shopping for cars...salespeople also dislike having to convince customers that the internet doesn't sell cars and no matter what the discrepancy in price...the dealership knows what the invoice really is.

If you can get an Evo for a 26K invoice from Edmunds...do it.

I agree. Ask a dealer to see the invoice. When they show you the invoice, that is obviously the invoice price. Everything is on the invoice, including hold back. If they won't show you the invoice, just go to a dealer that will. I do agree that filling out a credit application with your offer makes your offer appear much stronger. They know you are ready to do business.

You need to add the destination fee $595

i'd say have a good attitude. the dealers have a tendency to point out what the car was worth to a third party. tell them what the car is worth to you and explain why. definitely point out the fact that JDM versions get all the cool ACD/AYC 6 speed stuff.

Easiest way to get the best price is to shop around. I manage Internet sales for a luxury car dealership and the best deals are had by sending in inquiries to every dealer in your area and once you have a best price from each dealer, take the lowest best price to the other dealers and ask them to beat it.

Go where you get the best price. Don't **** anyone off and don't be a jerk and haggle over less than $150. If you're an adult and you do it right you will get the best possible deal and have a dealership with which you are still on good terms after buying the vehicle from them.

Biggest mistake you can make is to be an *******, but that's true about every aspect of life.

If you don't like what you're hearing from a dealership it's okay to be like "heh no thanks I have better offers" and end the conversation. but don't be a ******** because it WILL come back to bite you. maybe that Best Deal you found turns out to be a lie or whatever and then you're too embarassed to go back to the dealer you told off earlier so you have just screwed yourself. Always leave yourself a way out... and a way back in.

What I usually say is "x" is the price at which I will buy today. Over "X", I have to think it over. That way if the offer is not accepted, I can still come back.

Thanks so far guys but my other problem is that the closest dealer is in burlington VT and they only get a limited number of evo's. There getting in 2 by the end of the year and they know that they will go fast so how can I talkj down a price then. P.S. Who has paid the lowest amount for a new evo with wing and roof?

Last day of the month, especially during the winter, you can get a good price on ANY car at ANY dealer, just about.
