Drop-in filter vs. Cone.

I currently have a K&N drop-filter with the stock airbox. I also have a K&N Cone filter from a 2g DSM that im pretty sure will fit with the adapter.

I have a IX that is completely stock other than that. I was wondering if, at this point with everything else being stock, would the cone filter make that much of a difference? Should I wait until I get other mods before I even touch the intake filter? Also any other input for intakes/filters would be awesome too.

Thanks for the input. I think that answered my question. If I am planning to get it tuned. Im not sure when I will have a chance to get it tuned. I want to get other basic bolt ons before I get it tune. Should I just change it to the cone style now or should I wait.

Do you really need a tune just for changing the intake?

Install the cone and get a good turbo inlet tube like the Samco or Perrin. A properly designed intake will not throw off your MAF readings by much.

You may want to reconsider your choice of K&N though, check this out

Just for your information, do not confuse buying a filter for power gains over the idea of a filter that has good filtration. The filter should filter as much debris and particles and have good air flow.

dont change the intake without a proper tune. Go with a drop in if anything.

I put in an AEM dryflow cone filter with the stock tubing after the MAF (since reputable shops have told me it really makes no difference while on MAF) and I've noticed absolutely no difference. I can hear the spool up and bov better but yea no difference. Don't expect one without a tune.

I think I should add though that I think I see changes in the boost gauge. I believe (cannot remember exactly) that for the same throttle position, rpm and speed at steady state cruising I see a bit less vacuum with the filter. This is with the MR factory boost gauge so take what you want from it. The only way to know for sure is if I compare logs from before the filter install on the same road at the same cruising speed and tps, which I haven't had time to do.

I have both K&N cone filter and drop-in filter(installed right now). I didn't notice performance difference. Only sound.

I remember when I got my Perrin intake and retuned from the stock box, I gained about 40whp. This was all done on E85.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys!
Since it seems like it wont make any difference, im just going to install the cone filter and look into getting a few more mods/tune asap.

Also does anyone know of a good tuner in the Boise, Idaho area?
