Evo IX turbo vs Evo 8.5 turbo

Wus sup evom... So im at the begining stages of mildly tuning my car... I carried her over to titan motorsports yesterday and got tuned by john of jestr tuning and the car made 295whp/324tq with a baseline of 218/207... all my car had was a simple int/exh/ic-pipes/mbc on 93oct with a stock 9.8 housing...

My stock fuel pump reached its flowing limit... so therefor we left it at that... i've just ordered a walbro255 unit this evening and waiting on some s2 cams...

while john and i were talking about other evo's he's tuned, i mentioned one of his customers with a evo9 who's making 400+whp on e85 with a stock ix turbo...

i have the opportunity to purchase a 05evo8 turbo which also comes with the 10.5 housing as the 9... i know that the 9's turbo are bigger and i've seen then pull more than enough 400+hp runs... but what i cant find are the evo8.5 10.5 dyno tuning results to compare with...

can the 8.5-10.5 support over 400whp aswell?

does anybody know how much of a difference the 8.5-10.5 is than the 9-10.5 with the same mods...?

i know the size and flow rates are different but by how much?

I have heard from someone one time that an 8 Compressor wheel will make more power than a 9 compressor wheel but the 9 housing helps it out. However Lucas English made all his power I beleive on a stock 8 turbo with a 10.5 housing.

The back housings are the same, the IX has a slightly bigger compressor housing than the 05 VIII's to my knowledge, I'm not too sure on the limits of the 05 VIII's turbo but I do know STM ran 10.xx with it, although that car was a bit on the light side, but still.

Compressor wheels and turbine wheels are the same on the VIII and the IX turbos. The IX has an improved compressor cover(housing).

An 8.5 turbo is essentially your VIII turbo fitted with a 10.5cm turbine housing instead of the 9.8 turbine housing. That is the only difference. So, to convert your VIII turbo into an 8.5 turbo just pick up a 10.5cm turbine housing and swap turbine housings.

The IX turbo has the same compressor wheel and the same turbine wheel as your VIII turbo does. The IX turbo's compressor cover is an improved design compared to the VIII compressor cover.

Don't buy the 8.5 turbo. You can convert your VIII turbo into an 8.5 by just purchasing a 10.5cm turbine housing. Buying a used IX turbo would be a decent, low-buck upgrade for you though.

For insight I made 415/420 vd dynojet on the 8.5-10.5 turbo with the mods in my sig and trapped 121 mph with issues shifting to fourth.

I know the 9 turno has a bit more potential but for the work of changing the turbo it's not worth the gain value imho

turbo swaps are fairly painless if you know what your doing, let the bolts soak in pb blaster and remove the radiator, once you've done a tranny swap you realize that even that isn't so bad and everything else feels that much easier.

However unless your getting a smoking deal or have some reason for wanting to keep the stock turbo I would consider something a little bigger than the ix, maybe a bbk or fp green, the stock ix turbo is still a little on the small side.

I've had the tranny out 4 times unfortunately lol. And I didn't mean it was an all day event. I just meant given the price you typically pay combined with the time it takes to do I don't think the 15-20 whp bump is worth it when you could just save a bit more and get a used fp and gain so much more. But that's my opinion Of course.
