alignment question

Could someone please explain why at 70mph, my car will be pulling left and shake pretty bad in my steering wheel and I will see my passenger seat vibrating violently; then randomly (so it seems) all of a sudden it will drive perfectly straight and smooth. 75% of the time it will be very shaky.

I just got an alignment and they told me they got the total toe to .01 degrees but couldn't get it any closer to 0... for whatever reason... but they said no problems related to the front end.

So I'm really not sure what is going on here because it seems as if something is changing while I am driving. Any comments are appreciated.

My guess is that it isn't alignment related but steering related

If it's speed related it's a balance problem, bad tire, bent rim or any combination of the three. Try rotating them front to rear.

I also hear something binding when turning the wheel all the way from left to right or vice versa. Sounds as if something metal is catching on something else. Sounds like a spring.

Sounds like possibly a cv joint binding on you, could also cause your vibration. The toe won't cause an intermittent vibration.

Thanks, I will look into the cv joint.

It isn't a balance issue as the wheels/tires were balanced recently and my summer tires/wheels vibrated in the same manner.

Double check to make sure no control arms or tie rods are bent from smacking a curb. Also check wheel bearings and all cv joints.

aslong as the toe was even and in the green your good but it sound more than just a alignment issue it should not shake ask the shop that did your alignment if they did a shake down of your front end first to check the ball joints tie rod ends and etc because if any of that is bad there not supposed to align it till those issues are fixed

Part of the problem was that the drivers side front wheel bearing was shot, got that replaced and it drives a lot smoother now. It used to shake at all speeds. Now there is only noticible steering wheel shake above 70 mph.

I'm going to swap the front wheels with the back to see if it is a balancing issue in one of the front wheels.

now that the bearing is fixed, it makes the little shake in the wheel seem like the wheels aren't balanced

sounds like you've got a gremlin riding inside your wheel. that would be my guess.

If it shakes and goes away, it is a balance problem - both front wheels. When the heavy spots are in phase it vibrates, when out of phase, they cancel and the ride is smooth.

I have a noticeable "bounce" feeling and very slight steering wheel shake at speeds in excess of 70mph. At slow city speeds, there is no steering wheel shake but I still feel as if I am bouncing down the road (it is not very smooth) and switching my front wheels with the back made absolutely no difference.

I have fortune auto 500 coilovers that were installed at 25k miles. I now have 75k miles.

I will perform a bounce test on the front of my car but is it likely that my coilovers have neared the end of their lifespan and is the cause of the bouncing/steering wheel shake when driving?

Simple three step process will solve this issue... for aftermarket 18" wheels.
-Lift the car up, so both front wheels are in the air
-Remove wheels and then hand tighten the the lug nuts till the wheel is firmly seated
-Lower the vehicle back to the ground and then torque down to 85-90lbs with a torque wrench.

Trust me this works...done it many times.
