headlight relay.. my lights turn on when car is off

today i got to work and it was rainy/icy, i turned off my car and a half hour later a co worker told me they were on. i leave them on auto most of the time, so they turn off when you open the door and they did.. a few hours later, on then off again..

Check the battery connections. I've noticed that if I pull the battery, when the battery is reinstalled the headlights often come on. A bad connection at the battery could do the same.

If nothing there then maybe check under the driver's kick panel.

My problem now is my headlights come on when braking. As what I have read from Mitsubishi repair these problems are often due to a poor ground (chassis) connection somewhere. Try to flash the lights as you get out of the car to reset the relay. Or tap, clean or replace the light relay.

It can be the "Front Ecu" that controls all the exterior lighting on the car .

If the front ECU is what's controlling the headlights, that's a poor design decision that can cost mitsu lots on rebate costs. If you go to any vehicle inspection station and you fail emissions, it is mandated in the US that all cars sold here are covered for 8yrs 80k miles for any major emissions related part (ECU and Cat mostly but not O2 sensors.) Just got my RX8 swapped because of a check engine light... Mazda re-flashed and troubleshot for $175 and cleared the CEL, so I inspected immediately and passed. They said if it came up again the ECU would need to be replaced for $1600?? Three days later CEL came back on. I walked in there and told them my car will fail inspection (technically, it will fail an emissions test since they stop when they see a CEL on.) Got a new ECU and I demanded my $175 back. No longer have CEL issues and $175 richer.

It's not the ECU but the computer located on the back of the fuse panel by the driver's knee. BTW, if you are having the OP's problem I'd suggest pulling the driver's kick panel and checking for wiring corrosion. This could be the dreaded grommet leak in from the fender. Notice, he wrote that it had been raining.

Edit: Well, looking at the wiring diagram three ECUs' are involved, the column ECU, the ETACS ECU and the Front ECU. None of these are the engine ECU.

BTW, there is yet another for the A/C and one for the sunroof if you have a sunroof.
