are evo's really that great in snow?
I just bought my IX in November and thought it was coming with at least all seasons, however I got a high quality directional summer tire with nearly 90% tread so I didn't really complain. I forget the brand and I'm at work or I'd go out and look, but it's purely a summer tire and I've had no issues really.
I'm used to driving my Cobra year round up until last year when I finally bought an Escape 4x4 so the Cobra could rest in the Winter. Now the Evo is being driven because the Escape wouldn't start when it started snowing, ended up being the alternator which I would do myself except you need to remove the front axle to change the alternator on the Escape....
In other words, my Evo has been doing just fine with summer tires. I have no issues getting stuck, or accelerating. However when on completely snow covered roads you can't turn really sharp without going less than 5mph since it slides bad. Also stopping is bad too if you manage to lock up the tires. Light braking to stave off ABS has been working for me. Lots of following distance and I'm slowing almost to a stop to get in my driveway when the road is snowy.

I had an 03 Evo and own an 08 STi now. Both I had driven with comparable snow tires (Blizzaks, but the Evo had an older version of the ones on the STi). The Evo I had driven for awhile with all-seasons which I may be getting here shortly since I had a flat and they don't make the same Blizzaks any more (damn AWD).
Both of them did equally well and much better than the Porsche (also AWD) with snow tires on it (Hankook Ice Bears). The STi is more enjoyable in the snow and feels a little more stable but not by a ton. Mostly it is nicer having the 6 gears and the better low-end grunt but otherwise there's not a big difference. The Evo did plenty better than a lot of cars I've driven in the snow, that's for sure.
The only thing I've been in that inspired more snow confidence than the Evo or STi was our old (2004) Audi TT 2.0T... Summer tires on (not hardcore track ones though, probably closer to all-season, but still considered summer tires)... It drove almost as well in about an inch of snow as my Porsche did with the Ice Bears on... Quattro is that awesome.

The evo needs a rear sway bar then shes perfect for the snow. Stock suspension the car pushes too much add a sway bar and some nice snow tires and youre in for the most fun ever.
love my evo in the snow. gets through pretty thick **** and i got decent all seasons on. subies got better awd systems then evo 8's have so its gonnna feel more comfortable. but its how u,ur driving skill and the tires thats on it are mainly.

You won't believe the difference if and when you run winter tires. BTW, the emergency brake handle isn't there just for parking, a little tug allows the car to turn in the snow on summer tires. Experiment with this some before trying it on crowded streets because the effect is dramatic.
I find I'm already craving specific features of the ACD system to the point that I'm eager to reprogram it with my own maps. I want accel/decel lockup to work like "Snow", but release lock instantly on steering input like "Tarmac".With the Summer tires my front's locking up without braking when turning more than 10 degrees. After 10-15 degrees or so it finally lets go and unlocks upon which my tires grip again with a slight tap of the throttle. I just dislike that forced slip caused by the ACD system. I wish I could drive without feeling like a kid playing Nintendo slapping that ACD button like an arcade game.

I love this car in the snow..... It's fun if you enjoy interacting with the car and give it your full undivided attention. I'm sure with snow tires it's a beast.
I've been driving around on blizzaks on the evo this winter, and have no complaints. The car is very "point and shoot" in the winter, if the back end goes out on you trust the car will get you through and keep your foot in it (if you know what you're doing though, if you don't then drive VERY, VERY gently). I have yet to get stuck or lose control of the car, even in the worst weather conditions we've had this year. So yes, they really are that great.
This was during the 12/26 Blizzard on my way into work. About 10" of snow. I was literally plowing through it and the snow was rolling over the hood !! I have Dunlop M3 Wintersport tires and the car is truly amazing !
Nice pic! Are you having any issues with your front undercarriage?
