are evo's really that great in snow?
I have been running around in Missouri with Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3Ds in 245/40/17, constant freezing temperatures, ice covered in snow covered in ice, the only time I am having problems is when it tries to melt once a week and the slush owns me when it gets deeper than 4 inches.
been using conti dws with my evo in the snow, it's been working great so far - i get immediate power oversteer anytime i get slightly aggressive with the throttle turning in 1st and 2nd though lol
When reversing in snow as deep as the pic you posted, my front undercarriage plastic gets bent downwards by the snow. I have to keep bending it back up and attaching the fastener again.
It's a like a scoop when you are in reverse. It catches the snow and the snow starts to pull it down, which pops off the fastener.
I was wondering if that's common or not. It's happened to me twice now backing out of 2 feet of snow.

I run all seasons Conti Extremes.. OMG my car is great in the snow. My only issue is just breaking my front bumper I can get up any hill or get anywhere I need to. One of the best cars I have ever owned in the weather. I drive up to the mountains all the time in my evo for when I go snowboarding.

My X is outstanding, although it sits a little low and tends to plow more snow.

Compared to my '06 WRX(sold),the II feels better probably because its much lighter and more nimble than the Suby. The electronics in the X make it soooo stable.
My Evo is great in the snow/ice with all season tires on it, but we only get a few inches. For extreme snow definitely throw some winter tires on and you will have a blast.
Before purchasing my Evo 9 MR I did have a 05 wrx. I was very skeptical as to how well the evo would perform because the subaru was very good. Just to give you an idea, my subie had Blizzak LM-25 tires on the stock 16" wheels. My evo runs the same exact tires on the stock 17" BBS wheels. That pretty much provides for a fair comparison.
Aside from the issue of ground clearance, the Evo is noticeably better in the snow or ice. The real trick on the 05s and up is the ACD allowing the diff to engage at a delayed rate as to enhance a predictable driving experience on all surfaces. When going into a corner too fast with the subie, the car would simply under steer. The ACD in the Evo allows for the diff to adjust to how the power is put down. You can literally feel the car struggling to get you through the corners with a simple turn of the wheel and step on the gas. At the limit the Evo will under steer like the subie but that limit is set much higher with the help of the ACD.
The only advantage I felt with the subie was the extra ground clearance and bumper rigidity. My 9 is on Swift Spec R springs. I've driven the wrx on both the stock springs and a set of STi springs. The wrx just had more ground clearance (in both instances) due to the suspension setup but that is just the way the cars were setup. However, I will say that the bumpers on the Subaru are much more suited to crashing through high piled snow or decent amounts of accumulation. I felt 100% confident crashing through 2+ feet of snow to get out of my driveway without damage in the Subaru. With the Evo, I have to assess how hard the snow is in fear of cracking my front bumper or lip. Most of the time I shovel the skirt of the driveway before pulling out the Evo. The impact bumpers on the Subie just inspired more confidence in these type of situations.
Hope that summed it up. Both have pros and cons but both perform quite well.
