What would it take?: Evo versus GTR
Evos aren't top speed cars. The engineers designing it would have taken a whole different approach when desgining it if that was one of their goals.
The only time I see Evos pitted against GT-Rs is in Time Attack, and that usually favors cars with quick acceleration ,great grip and light weight. Insideline already made an X that could hang with the "old" GT-R so use that article as a starting point and add some more horsepower to catch the new 2012 one.
Assuming you are going to get all your money or even a significant portion of it back after heavily modding ANY car is and always will be silly.

I looked it up: http://www.2009gtr.com/2009/12/insid...tock-gt-r.html
your trying to compare 2 completely different cars. of course stock to stock the evo doesnt have a chance
I was rolling over numbers in my head.
I think several of you are very very right.
Ohlins or motec plus supporting for suspension
Sheppard to redo our trans and difs.
plus all the engine and body stuff.
It does sounds like 30K-40K is the gap between great car and super car.
I wonder how close an fq360 or fq400 would be to a GTR. If I remember right the 400's could knock out 170mph. While there would still be a gap perhaps it wouldnt be 30K
Perhaps a US IX would be better served by finding a salvage fq as a donor car?
for the sti troll let me be clear: This is a pursuit of what it would take to bridge the gap to a super car. Or if in fact that it can be done without surpassing the cost of the super car.
Thanks

I think that the GTR wil almost always come out on top. I'm mean it just makes crazy power with little mods as mentioned above.
However, in rare cases, where money is not an issue, the Evo will win. I say this simply because of how much R&D has been done to the evo vs the gtr.
I just think that it's an honor that our cars can give the GTR a run for it's money at the end of the day... Win or lose...

I think that if you had the 80k+ to buy a GTR you could just take that money and put it into an Evo then you'd still have money left over...it's just how much time and effort you want to put into it.
More googling:
Well maybe the gtr isnt the holy grail:
Brakes: replacement $7K
Trans: $20K
a constant relationship with your dealer: priceless
Nissan was already sued about detonating transmissions because people turned their 'traction control off' (08-09's). Nissan took an about face and reinstated warranties. But for the person that would be reaching to buy one of these used... it would be terminal to suffer the repairs.
So from what insideline did with a X, maybe that the same thing could be done to a IX , maybe with a bit of compensation for no active handling. For less than 15K. It looks like the problem is when you are on a track that has higher speeds. I haven't participated in a standing start on a track, i think that 0-60 is going to be hard to approach, but not really an issue for road racing. I dont think a human would be able to shift that quickly and engage power. Well maybe but after the 3rd time we are at the trans shop lol.

exactly like stated. these cars were build with completely different ideas. the evos has always been a rally car and the gtr was build for speed. it wont take much to beat a stock one in the 1/4 mile, but as far as a modded one goes? where do the mods stop? AMS has a 9 second GTR....how much money do you think youll have to dump into an evo to beat that?!
I think the question is easy. Most of us have a comfort zone on what type of car we would mod. The evo is dead in this comfort zone. Its affordable and quick has tons of room for growth.
When you move into supercars, that comfort zone is eliminated by the cost of entry.
The pursuit is too see if it is possible to attain supercar performance, in this case the gtr, without exceeding the cost of the supercar.
I am thinking that insidelines 388whp 10 with AST's and new skins really really comes close.
I sure wouldn't want to play the mod game with a person that is comfortable modding their 100K car. I would go home very sad LOL.

For your original question about winter driving the evo is leaps ahead.
Correct me if i'm wrong but the GTR is more RWD biased and as seen about numerous accelaration with a fellow man with a GTR I was ALLWAYS ahead in the big white stuff.
For a 100% daily driving car here in the great north an evo is much more suited for day to day use.
About buying a 2009 or even a 2010 GTR I would be concerned with all thoses warranty issues with the tranny. Maybe waiting for a 2011-2012 model is the best bet.
The GTR is almost a Supercar, on paper...
The evo is an rally bred 4 door saloon that can hang with it, with $$$$ yes but in numerous condition with a lot less than you think.

What I would do...
Engine:
-2.4l - What, I love the torque from a 2.4...
-Some GT30 variant (I refuse to go to some monster turbo and kill the low end)
-E85 and the rest of the supporting cast.
Trans:
-A good clutch, if needed maybe a gearing change.
Suspension
-Basic Ohlin DFV or AST 5100's. Double adjustables aren't really necessary
-Mild brake upgrade and solid brake ducting - We are pretty solid in braking dept.
-Replace all bushing.
-285s with some rolled fenders.
Aero.
Basic splitter and wing.
That should get you there or at least pretty close. At that point it'll just take a well sorted car and you shouldn't have much problem hanging with a GTR unless doing top speed runs.
All totaled you would be around 15-20k in mods. Probably could get there cheaper, but will have to make compromises.
After all this, you still have "just" an Evo. Park side by side and people will still flock to the more expensive car, its just human nature to be drawn to the more un-attainable.

like this convo. the tranny issues and nissan voiding warranties like candy keep me from buying a gtr. Have you guys looked at prices of parts for the gtr lets not talk about general maintence you have to preform really. its 300 for them to change your oil at the dealer here. Every car is different and there will always be a stronger/better car etc. peop;le forget you can spend 22k in just the motor work to get it right period. built 2.3/2.4 built head the turbo bolt on labor come on now. you should never build a car to try and get all funds back period. i would not buy a gtr because the price of parts are insane and labor
