Using rev limiter as safety

A funny story I thought I would share

This weekend i was playing around with Ecuflash and Evoscan on a my friends dads car, i have tuned sr20de, and vet before but I was just learning about Ecuflash and Evoscan. The reason I was there was originally checking for why there was an engine light on and it was for an O2 sensor. So while looking around on the Ecu, My friends dad asked me if I could lower the rpm and speed limiter. I was like yes I could lower them both and I ask why would u want to. He tells me his son wants to borrow my car, first off his son is 22 and does work. I was like its ur car u do what you want I dont care so I lowered it 4000rpm, I didnt touch the speed limiter.

So that night my friend calls me and tells me his dad let him borrow the car and wants to know if I want a ride. He didn't know I helped his dad, so I was like ya for sure.

So he comes to my house we are leaving and but its a school zone so he took it slow, but once we where on the main road he punches it and it i am just watching his face as it hit 4k and stops reving he freaks out. He is like is that normal, I play stupid and am like I dont know man a car should stop at 4k what did u do. He started to freak out and was like OMG my dad going to kill me. I am like dont worry there has to be a reason what did u do. He starts to cry thats when i started to feel bad but didnt tell him. I am like drive slowly take me home, drive home safely and tell ur dad.

His dad comes to my house like 30min after with his son and his dad is just laughing his *** off and his son is pissed. So he asked me to put the rev limiter back to factory 7606rpm. his son was so mad at me, I thought it was funny

This is my Q:

This got me thinking is it a good idea if someone needs to borrow ur car to lower the Rpm and use it as a safety so the driver doesn't kill themselves or blow up the car

"Yes" I know you cant stop people from driving crazy but not giving them full power of the car or a car can help minimize there chances of harming the car or themselves.

I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

Hell f#(king yea it's a great idea!
If who ever is barrowing your car has any respect for you, they will never know anyways. Ok, maybe not 4K but maybe a generous 5K rev limit and a boost limit of 200. If they come back to you and say, "Hey man, sorry, I think something is wrong with your car...." You can say, yea there's something wrong, but it's not the car!
It's not their car to be beating on and they are not going to go through the stress, time, and money to work on it!
You need to barrow the car, fine barrow it! But you are not going to beat on my car!

Valet mode in Tephra ROMs is good example of such safety.

Dads are smart and that is a great idea i mean the point is clearly proven if someone else uses your car there going to try to beat on it even your own kids lol even if you truly belive your friend of kids will not its still a safe thing to do cus temptation is always there especially in an EVO

That is not a bad idea. Well for those who go to places like that.

You could even use the 8 IC spray switch to turn it on or off in some way.

Could even use it as a secondary sort of anti theft thing. Set the top speed for 25 and the rev limit to 3k when you are not in the car.

Someone with more knowledge than me would have to chime in on it.

Not sure if you would need a secondary ECU to switch it too when not in the car or if a switch could control differing setups within the same ECU.

you would need to do this through ecuflash to change the RPM value. This would needed to be done the day before you go away or give the car out.

When my buddies dad hit me with the question, i wondered about it and thought it was a great idea.

But what if the person borrowing goes to pass and downshift RPM go past rev limiter, this could cause an accident when they go to pass and have no power. ?

That would be an issue and would be a thing to consider. However, if I am loaning someone my evo I would trust them to drive it and not do this.

For the other reasons posted above it would be sort of cool though, if you could use the switch so it did not affect your drive to the place.

i dont see the reason they would need to downshift and pass. just pass like a normal person would on the highway and there will be no issue.

i think this is a great idea but none of my friends can drive a manual car anyway

I like this idea. It would make a theif wonder if there is something wrong with the car and possibly abandon it.

Everything you guys are talking about can be accomplished with Valet mode which is already included in TephraMod's (V7)
