Question Keep my car or get and EVO?

hey guys,

Im from the Rx-7 forum, and my 7 has been giving me some problems. The clutch is starting to go, and my tach just stopped working. I really got a feeling for a new car. My friend took his mirage in to the dealership to get an oil change, and while in the showroom we started to check out the EVO. I like how it looks, but its just a little to big. I can live with that tho. They didnt let me test drive it, but i was in awe when i was sitting in it. Well i wanted to ask you guys, how do you think and EVO compares to a 3rd gen 7, and an STI. I mean performance, reputation, modibility, maintence and does the EVO pull hard even after 150?

Dont get me wrong i love my car to death, just that i want to sell it and get something new. Plus i loved how that EVO smelled

ALI - Thanks

Well, let's just say the Evo has won 2 Car of the Year awards thus far (one by SCC and the other by Automobile [anyone know which issue that was? I want that issue]). And EVERY (and I do mean every) magazine that I have read that put the Evo vs STi, the Evo wins everytime. The STi is a couple tenth's of a second faster, but doesn't handle nearly as well as the Evo.

I love my Evo. She is my weekend car and that makes me enjoy the car even more. You know where my vote goes...

Evo doesn't pull after 150. Not stock but I'm sure your stock RX-7 didn't either

Smile New Evo over RX-7?

The RX-7 is an aboslute gem to drive. great handling and immediate power and response on tap. One complaint, it hates traffic jams and overheats easily as rotary engines heat up to 150 - 200 deg hotter than that of an Evo. I'm an RX-7 owner and i can share your sentiment that there are some problems associated with that car. My mechanic told me that if a problem creeps up you have to attend to it immediately otherwise, it will amount to something very much bigger in a short space of time.

Coming to the Evo, I'm thinking of getting one possibly a Tommi Makinen Evo or maybe the Evo 7. The Evo's have very good road handling even at high speeds and mods are aplenty. They are both very diff cars (Evo and RX-7) and as mentioned the Evo would make a very good everyday car. Plus the fuel consumption is way way less compared to that of the RX-7. I'm planning to use the Evo for everyday and occasionally for track whilst the RX-7 will go for track only. Can't afford to keep it stuck in traffic all the time.

Your Mazda RX-7 is a 94 model? Then it's no surprise that some problems are occurring. Mine's a 99 RS model. Problems will come in heaps soon. Hahaha. and my wallet will get singed and burned. With some meticulous care and proper servicing it will probably last another 15,000 miles before an engine transplant.

What I love about the Tommi Makinen Evo is that looks-wise, it exudes a tough character and it will save me money on getting a bodykit. Plus it's a damn reliable car as well.

Evo

Pros:
awd
good in snow
4 door
5 seats ( more *****es )
very practical car....

i like the rx7 but if i were in your position i would probably be looking to get rid of it too , its small as hell , only fits you and a friend.... and if you have winter where you live you cant drive it.

I've had my Evo for about two months now and all I can say is: "Wow". I've driven quite a few cars- NSX, 300ZX TT, Ferrari F355, Corvette C5 and Z06- and this one has been the most fun of all. For $30k, the performance you get is incredible. I still have a 300ZX Twin Turbo that has about 400hp and although the Z is faster, the Evo is superior in so many ways. In case you already haven't heard, the handling is awesome. The brakes are equal to the task. The AWD allows you to do some incredible launches if you have the money to support your habit ("If you wanna play, you gotta pay"). Then you get two comfortable (especially compared to Supra, Porsche, M3) rear seats. You can use it as a family car! I do.

Yes buy the Evo you will not be sorry. I can say that no other car I have had has been better at just about everything than the Evo. I am on my second Evo and would not by any other unless it was better and I dont see that happening anytime soon.

The stock 7's doesnt have any speed cuts on them. I had mine up to about 155 against a newer M3, but shut it down because my headlight cover blew off

Are the top ends on these cars anygood, also is anything liable to fly off

Why does it matter what the top speed is? I had a NSX and did 175 in it and though if the tire blows out I am dead. Why does it matter you will NEVER get over 150 on a track unless you have a REAL race car and if you are doing that on the street please go by a civic that will only do 110-120 so you don't kill yourself or someone else. I had a 1994 RX-7 as well with a MOTEC and the rest of the carp, the EVO kills it. The RX ran good about 20% of the time. The evo ALWAYS runs good.

I haven't had mine above 120 yet but you need to do some modifications to get good high-rpm/top-end power on these cars- especially if you're used to high-horsepower cars like the RX7 TT, 300ZXTT, Corvette, etc.

I believe Dynoflash and Vishnu are two of the popular choices for more power. Do a search for some of their posts.

The Evo is not geared as a top end flyer - you'd see about 160ish max even with add-ons, you just run out of gear - of course you may get to that speed VERY quickly. If you want a freeway brawler look to a Supra, 300ZX TT, MBZ or Porsche. Think go-cart with the EVO. The aero dynamics and shape of the car doesnt lend itself to high speed running, it's more of a cruise at 80 zip up to 120 and back down to play. If a car is on your butt at 120-130 in an Evo, most likely you're gonna lose or not gain after that. The Evo is an extremely agile sprinter...and stopper =)

If you want a high top speed car stick with the 7 or any other turbo or V8 RWD car. AWD cars are not made for high speeds on the high way. Its a "line up with someone off the line and just eat them alive" or a "track fun" car and maybe even a drag car(unless you want to do ove 160 int he 1/4) but its not a "I want to do 160 on the highway" car. I will be using mine for the track and make a few drag appearances but I dotn plan on chalanging a porche in a 80-180 mph dash on the highway.
