Evo 8 mr wanted mods, need advice

Hey guys

So Basically, I'm thinking of buying a custom 3" TBE, with a dump pipe, after getting my car tuned... Afterthis going to purchase a Apexi Power FC ? (http://www.nengun.com/apexi/power-fc...itsubishi-evo8) .. If i buy this would i still need a MBC ?

Also whats the difference between custom / boltons (cons & pros) with exhaust

Usually you want to mod first then tune, if you tune first and then do the mods you'll have to go right back to the tuner to get it retuned. Try to mod several things at once so your not going back to the tuner 20 times. If your tuning yourself then you can mod however you please.

Also I suggest you go find someone local with a dump pipe, I lived with one for a year on my old STI and I will never do it again. It got old after about 2 weeks (unless I was scaring people on the sidewalk, that never gets old).

Instead of the power FC I would suggest looking into Tephramod v7, ask your tuner about it. There are plenty of evos out there running sub 10sec 1/4mile times on the stock ecu and I can't imagine why you would need a $1400 engine management system.

As far as a MBC or boost controller, you will need to upgrade the stock unit eventually if you plan on running much more than stock boost. If you want to go cheap, you can buy a new restriction pill for about $30-$40 or make your own for cheaper. This will let you run more boost and still allow the ecu to have control. Any of the MBCs I think are worth buying are about $100 and they work well but you will overboost on cold days and underboost on hot days, so get one that is adjustable from inside the cabin. Also and this is my opinion but I feel you will make more power with an electric boost controller over a MBC. Personally I prefer the grimspeed ebcs, (read electronic boost control solenoid) and it will still allow control of boost through the stock ecu. If your paying someone to tune your car this might add extra $$$$, the unit itself is about $100. If you decide to go the electronic route be sure you are purchasing an 'interrupt' style valve, not a bleed style.

The difference between custom exhaust and bolt-on exhaust in my opinion is really just going to be price and performance. With a bolt on you know what you are getting, and how much it will cost. Unless the guy you have doing your 'custom' exhaust does alot of them, I can't imagine him doing as good of a job, as quickly, and for the cost that you can purchase a pre-made one for. Yeah its cool to say its 'custom' (I guess?) but if your just overpaying who cares.

I'm guessing your a little new at this so I'll give you some good advice. One of the best reasons to own an evo is that you can make them silly fast for alot less cash than alot of other cars. A main reason being that parts are pretty inexpensive even for nice quality parts. This is because alot of people own these cars and alot of owners mod them. Almost every evo I have ever seen (older than a year or so) has at least SOME modifications to it. What other car can you say that about? The other reason being of course that the 4g63t is an awesome motor that responds very well to modification.

Take advantage of this and buy the premade parts. They aren't alot of money, they fit, they work, and chances are if you have any questions about it you can find someone on here that has the same part and can tell you how easy/hard it was to install, and how well it worked. The only time I would consider doing something custom is if I either could not find what I needed pre-made, felt I could do it custom just as well and for less, or just had money to burn. (see custom leather wrapped interior.)

You'll gain power over a recirculated pipe for sure, I just didnt feel it was worth the trouble. With an open dump your reducing the back pressure the engine sees so it doesn't have to work as hard to push the exhaust out and can instead use that energy to put more power to the wheels. On my sti I think I gained about 20whp but that was with a larger than stock turbo. On the stock IX turbo the gains would be less but as you go bigger you would get more and more power from going open dump.

It comes down to personal choice, some people don't mind the noise or maybe I'm just getting old but I like to try and keep my car quiet. I think a fast quiet car is more impressive than a fast loud one. If I was just driving it on the track or weekends, I might reconsider one, the power gains can be worth it for sure. However I like to drive more often than that and I found myself staying out of boost because it was so loud. Especially annoying (ear ringing) with my window down.

You might not feel this way, thats why I suggest hearing one in person, I wish I had done that lol. If you can't find an open dump car to listen to try youtube with the volume on your stereo all the way up. Or just find a car running open headers.... that would be close Trust me open dump is probably louder than you think. I know it was for me.

Akeric has some good info. I agree, please don't buy a Power FC. That would be a downgrade over the stock ECU

Let me know if you ever need any parts brother.

You should set a hp/tq goal. That would help you decide to to the parts you will need for that goal. Gl
