Funky noise

Ok so i bought my car almost a year and a half ago. And it has always had this noise. Some days its louder than others. It sounds like a ticking/knock its loudest when you first start the car, and slowly get quieter as the car warms up. The sound does get faster when the car is revved up. I have videos uploading now of the noise.

And also i just changed the oil yesterday with Rotella t6.

The cams where installed by the previous owner, so i have no way of knowing how long they where in or anything else. I bought it from a dealer and they didn't know it had cams either.

Cosworth M2 cams
Invidia G200 turbo back catless
Cobb sf intake
hallman boost controller
Walbro 255

all parts except cams and intake where done in the past week and the car has not been driven. Im waiting for my tune.

Is it coming from the top or bottom of the engine? I'm betting it's something in the head, especially since the car's cammed.

sounds like a valvetrain issue like a lifter or rocker. I have a similiar noise but much much milder. At first i thought it was a coil jumping spark but i think it is just a sticky lifter or rocker. but that is moderate enough to perhaps cause concern.

My guess is sticky lifters. Mitsis lifters have (or used to, not sure if they changed them) a 0.5mm oil hole, it's pretty easy for a bit of something to block part or all of that hole. I used an oil thinner in my old lancer for oil changes and it did quiet it down but it never went away. There are a few additives available for sticky lifters. Personally I'm not too keen on putting additives in my evo though.

Curious: does it go away completely if you warm it and rev it high with load? My old lancer would lose it's tick if it got a reasonable amount of oil pressure.

Yes it does, after its fully warm it still ticks, but not loud enough to hear over injectors. but if you rev it it will tick up until about 2500-3000 rpm and then get quiet like its not happening anymore

you have one collapsed lifter or it was installed wrong. you may want to have it fix asap.

Just to clarify, it goes away when you pass 3k rpm and doesn't come back when the rpm fall back below 3k? (ie it goes away until next time you start the car).

No it goes away when you rev past 3k and then once the rpms die back down it ticks again.

My best guess (I'm far from being a mechanic btw), one of the lifter's oil holes has been partially blocked and is sticking from not having enough oil. When your oil pressure increases it manages to get some oil and frees up but starts sticking once that oil flows through. If this is the problem, it's clearly bad for any moving part to be deprived of oil and should be tended to.

How did your oil change work out?
