So my 2006 mr tranny is messing up. All gears work great but when im in 6th gear it makes a grinding noise. Not when im shifting into the gear, but when its engaged completly into 6th. The tranny has about 27000 miles on it, but im making around 400hp/400tq. Has anyone know what is causing this or had this happen?

 

From all the threads I have read about the MR transmission, 400 hp is about as much power as it can take. So I suspect your trans just can't hold the power level and is starting to go out on you. 6 speed just isn't as strong as the 5 speed, which is why high hp Evo MR's ditch it for the 5 gear. Your best bet is probably to swap for the regular IX 5 speed, or rebuild your 6 speed.

 

I have read that too but its usally 3rd,4th,or 5th that goes. Those gears are fine its only when im in 6th. Anyone else have any insight on this?

 

As you said, its a little odd since its 3rd and 4th (especially) that tend to go out, as usually people aren't boosting heavily in 6th

I enjoy the six speed myself, but that does not explain why mine is making a horrible noise in six gear.
Someone on here has to know something about this.

 

im having issues with my evo8 tranny as well, kinda scared to drive it?



i was cruising to work today in 5th gear around 50mph when all the sudden i heard a loud shrill grind! so i pulled out of 5th and went home, car shifts fine 1-4 but even at a stop when i try to engage 5th it makes a shrill grind. i dont want to gernade the trans so im looking for some pointers of what i should do



bought the car used with 60K now has 150K its my daily

 

If its making noise in the gear, something is not right. Id have a trusted shop check it out for you. I know a common problem is the 5/6 shift fork gets bent easily due to heat.

At least you have 6th gear, my car decided to do its own 5 speed conversion. I havent had 6th gear for 5 months now. Haha

 

400WHP shouldnt be much for a stock tranny, I have seen a lot more than that on a stock tranny.
What clutch you got in the car?

 

I would drain the trans fluid see if you find anything. Also may be good to put some clean fluid in there. I have a 6sp and had my trans go at 27k. but was 3rd gear. Odd that 6th would go. I would start with a fluid change and check the old fluid for anything out of the ordinary.

If that doesn't do anything may be time for a rebuild.

 

Yes my 03 won't go into 5 while driving if I'm at a stop I can put it in 5th but when I start to let the clutch out it starts to grind.

I think I might put a used tranny in instead of dealing with the cost of a complete rebuild
