Unless you are at the track everyday or dragstrip you should really get about 36k to 50k out of this clutch. I had no problems reaching 100k on my SHO (cheap American POS with decent power) or NSX on the stock clutch. They weren't Motor Trend test cars for that entire duration but they certainly were driven! I think clutch problems are limited to a couple percent of evo owners. I recently crossed 10k and had my fourth oil change and my brakes/clutch inspected. Very little wear is what I'm told.
I have over 19k on the stock clutch with a load (at least 50) of 5000+ rpm clutch drops for AutoX launching. I have also roasted the clutch out at around 7000rpm two or three times trying to slip it when launching. The clutch feels a bit soft, but I don't think it's slipping at all.
Clutch install should not be $1600, though he is probably right in parts being about $400. Unfortunately I couldn't get the clutch disc price from mitsubishiparts.net (the shopping cart is screwed up), but I think the pressure plate is about $120. I'm guessing the disc is about another $100 and a little bit more for the TO bearing. Add in dealer markup and tax, and you'll probably be close to $400.
$1200 for labor is absurd. Yes, the shop manual does recommend an engine hoist, but that is to hold the engine up when you remove the centermember and disconnect the engine from the two lower pitch stops. You could probably just as easily support the thing with a jack on the oil pan, there's still one more motor mount holding the engine in place up top.

I have 25k miles on my stock clutch. I have the original clutch line and pill. I autocrossed...the car has seen over 250 miles of track driving. I have zero clutch slip.
I can see this thing lasting to 36k easily.
It's all in knowing how to shift and match revs up and down through the gears.
