Got a very weird knocking noise in first gear today. Evo 8 with turbo back exhaust, stage 3 clutch, polyurethane motor mounts, and AMS tuned.
Can't hear it until I engage the clutch and start moving. It only does it in first gear and at low rpms.....pretty much cannot hear it once you hit about 3k rpms in first. It is a very distinct "knock" sound. Sort of sounds along with the rpms but not entirely. Very strange. Any ideas?
Also, it does not do this in any other gear and it is driving perfectly fine.
Thanks in advance

I will try to get a video up. According to previous owner the clutch has been in the car from pretty low mileage. It has definitely been in it for a while, however, it is still very smooth, grabs hard, and not showing any signs of slipping. I just drove it and noticed that you can here what sounds like a very slight, soft rattle at idle. When I hit the clutch and put the car into first the noise goes away. Then I release the clutch, begin to move and it starts knocking. Sounds like someone tapping on a wooden door. It speeds up with the speed I am going up to about 3-4k rpms in first gear and then completely goes away. Not present in any other gears or at any other speeds. Car is driving perfectly fine as well. The knock is scaring the S*** out of me though.

so only when you are in gear? If you pop the hood start the car and rev the motor you don't hear it? Sounds like rod knock but your description doesn't fit the bill. Is anything hitting anything any plastic under the car. Have you done a visual inspection on the underneath
Yes, only when I am in first gear. You do not hear it when you rev the motor. And no I have not done a visual inspection under the car, not really sure what to look for to be honest.
how many miles on your clutch? I would make sure your timing belt cover isn't loose or nothing is hitting anything by the wheels. Check the air break guides see if anything is rubbing check the axle boots. Sway bars end links. Also check your lugs make sure your well isn't loose. Idk reaching here. I am close to Philly if you want a 2nd set of eyes.
pretty high mileage on the clutch don't know for sure. I would say around 60k at least. Still grabs strong and is not slipping at all though. Wheels aren't loose, sway bar end links seem ok. Not really sure what to look for...And I might take you up on that thedru...i will let you know. Thanks
well I am out of suggestions. anytime I am always working on one of my cars. Hope some others can chime in. Might have some better input. That noise would make me nervous as well.
