I agree, what I said could very well be debateable. My reasoning is that since there's more air getting in for the same throttle position, the engine will make a bit more power during cruise and your TPS will be slightly lower. Whether that compensates for the added fuel is the real question though.

I had an Evo 8 (looking for one again) and when the clutch went out on it I had to drive it still for a week or two until a friend could help me swap it out.

during that time, I had to stay off boost almost completely or it would slip. I did the math and I made 30mpg.

so boost is your enemy. you can drive an Evo like a Lancer ES and get pretty good mileage in my experience.

EDIT: to say that the reason Prius' get good mileage is not because of the hybrid components, but because they prohibit you from driving fast. That top gear test pretty much proves it.

I can average more than 25mpg when on the highway and doing the speed limit. If you drive the car easy you'll drastically improve your mpg.

But I do use cruise control to help maintain the same speed. Not sure if 8's & 9's have cruise control

Oem block has a compression of around 8:5:1 . That is really low and in my opinion hurts MPG's. To increase MPG's we need to build the block to increase the compression to around 10:5:1 or 11:1:1 . With a higher compression your motor will make more power off boost conditions in turn require less effort to accelerate and maintain speed. You can run higher compression with 93 octane. If I'm not mistaken, Buschur builds his motors now with around 10:1:1-10:5:1 compression.

Also something else that helps is removing a lot of unsprung weight. I used to own Nissan Sentra 2003 SER Spec V and when performed the balance shaft removal mod, my mpg's jumped from 20 MPG's grandma driving to around 26 MPG's spirited driving. But the balance shaft for that care was a 8"x8" cartridge with gears etc.. weighing around 10-15 lbs. The evo bs is just a long rod, so in comparison I dont think the Evo bs has that much unsprung negative rotational weight as that nissan bs had. I'm just mentioning this to let you know that reducing unsprung weight can also be beneficial.

34.4 Mpg Average...oh wait that's my xB.

The Evo sees roughly 240 miles per tank depending on how hard it's driven, highest being about 260 miles before the light came on. A well sorted tune can drastically help your mpg...but realistically the Evo just is not good on gas.

Pull the wing off. If you mainly drive on the highway, you'll pick up an extra mpg or 2. I pulled mine off for a long trip and averaged +3mpg. But I rarely went <75mph.
