Evo 9 randomly not starting

Hi guys,

Hope to get some answers here. I searched but couldn't find someone with the same issue. It started with it just cranking but no fire. Happens maybe once or twice a month and randomly. If I cranked in 3 times it would usually starts up fine and drives fine, no issues. A few months ago, I could confidently say it would start on the 3 crank (which is still and issue). However, recently it would take many tries and waiting and trying again. But it still happens randomly. Last night I turned my car off for maybe a minute and in wouldn't start back up without fighting with it.

Things I think it could be:
Fuel pump
Fuel pump relay
Fuel pump regulator
Crank angle position sensor

Currently I'm stock except for turboback, cone filter, licp, mild tune.

I've tried just turning the key to on for a few seconds first to prime fuel system, at first I thought it was working but doesnt seem like it anymore. I usually don't hear the fuel pump so I don't know if it's even running when I do that.

I don't know how to diagnose this since it's so random and when it happens I don't have the time to go tear into it to see what's wrong.

I apologize for any typos or goofed up sentences... Typed this on my phone waiting for my girlfriend to get her nails done....

Thanks in advance!

I think if it was the sensor it would throw a code.(I would hope) As for the relay is it one of the relays you can switch with another of the same type under the fuse box?

IGNITION SWITCH!!! My 8 had the same issue. I will dig up my thread and post it in here for you.

The GOOD news is though, an ignition switch is cheap (can find one on here for $50), very easy to change, and you DON'T need to get a new key cut.

Edit: Here is my thread I originally posted last year.

I'm going through this same issue as well, first assumption was starter. Raised the car and tapped it a few times and it started to return to normal, so I assumed it was that. Replaced and still same issue. Turbo timer said I had 11.6 volts so I thought maybe battery? Replaced that and still no go. Low gas? (I had below a quarter but not enough for the light to come on) and still same thing. It does have a code but it says its for the wastegate? It only says that when my boost is too high but I've turned it WAAAY down to save on gas and still same issue. I'd like to hear sollutions as well, (not trying to thread jack but I wanna solve this issue to)

Yup. My starters good, I have good voltage. It would sometimes do it will a full tank or a low tank of gas. I'm going to try to replicate the issue this weekend.

My last plug change was recent (early this year) with oem plugs. Runs great when it starts.
How do you check the coils?

If I have time the next time it doesn't start up, I'll check for spark and fuel

For the coils i just meant do a quick visual inspection by removing the spark plug cover and making sure all the connectors are ok and that the wire boots are all properly installed over the plugs. Did his problem start occurring shortly after you did your plug change this year?

Way to rule out if its tt related, turn it off try cranking. Mines doin same thing n im at point where either its ignition switch or key related. Prime sound comes on, everything lights up on dash. Sometimes it starts first time sometimes I yell fu@k out the window. Haha but if it starts remember how you put the key in the time it cranked. Ive noticed with mine from on to start with key she miles to be pushed in now to start.check that should help till u can fully diagnose it.
