Getting JDM EVO To US
Getting JDM EVO To US
I am pretty sure you all have seen this question, but I have to ask again. Since the US military stationed me here in Europe I was able to get my hands on a RHD 99 EVO VI GSR. It is time for me to come back to the states, and I was wondering if there is anyway for me to get this car back into the US? I am open to all suggestions.
There is, and you just happen to be lucky enough that you bought a VI. The VI is the first model that is able to be shipped back to the US and actually used as a daily driver and not "race only"! (To my knowledge atleast). I am in the Air Force myself and am stationed in Japan, and own an Evo I. The first thing I would do would be to contact TMO and see what they can do for you, if they can't help I'd look on the internet for a company that ships cars back 100% legally. It might be expensive, but if it is worth it to you then give it a shot. I know a couple people on this site have Evo VII's that were imported, try and get in touch with them and ask them who and what they went through.

I had an acquaintance several years ago who had brought an NSR-250 (I THINK it was a 250) from Japan, I want to say Kadena. Anyway, when he got to Cannon, he simply took his Japanese title to the MVD in Clovis and they issued him a US title for it! They didn't check anything at all, they simply issued him a title and a plate!
As for the shipping, he had it crated and sent as hold baggage. A car might be a little different, but you can always check and see.

yes, you can bring it over, as long as your orders say you can ship one back thru the government. go to TMO and legal and get the paperwork started. the process takes about a month - i hope you have time.

I've heard of a few military men who tried unsuccessfully to bring in non US compliant cars after their tours ended.
Your Military contract might allow you to ship a car back when your tour is over, but you will still have to go through the Feds to get that car off the boat, through customs, through visual inspection, duties paid for, etc. Then you will have to battle your state govt to get a car, with a Japanese VIN number that is different that a US VIN, titled and registered.
I would suggest you sell the Evo shortly before leaving. Buy yourself a classic car and import it back. Sell the classic when you get here since most of em are worth more in the US than anywhere else in the world. use the proceeds to get yourself an Evo VIII.
