Clunking noise in reverse
Clunking noise in reverse
This morning when I backed out of my driveway I noticed a clunking noise. It is repetitive, and its frequency is directly related to speed. It does not happen when I drive forward. When I got home from work I rolled down a hill backwards in neutral with the engine off. The noise still happened. I still have not heard anything unusual while moving forward, including rolling forward in neutral with the engine off. I have 45000 miles, and I have never revved it up and dropped the clutch. I have not gone to a track, and I changed the transmission and differential fluids about 10000 miles ago. It sounds pretty bad, what could this sound be?
I called local dealer, and described the problem. They said it could be the Trans ring center which they estimated would be 300 to fix. I asked them to repeat the name of the part 4 times, and "trans ring center" was the best I could hear, but I have never heard of such a part, and transfer case would be more than $300.
I can handle $300 it is too bad that I am the second owner or it would be covered. I got the car with 4000 miles. I wanted a new 2006, but dealers were jacking up the price at the time.

I am still hoping to find out what a trans ring circle is and what it does. Should I go to mitsu dealer, or my local mechanic? If I keep driving will I damage something else? Could I fix it myself? Any info I can get would be greatly appreciated. I cannot seem to find anything about this part on google or in this forum.
It happens when I roll back. I thought about the brakes, but coasting backwards with the engine off it sounds like it is coming from front center, but a vibration in the wheel could transmit through the drive shaft.
