Loud clunking!! Yay!

So on my drive home today I started hearing some odd clunky noises so I coasted into a parking and had my friend pick me up.

I'm hoping it's not all that sinister. It doesn't happen when the engine is idling, it doesn't happen when I push the clutch in, it doesn't happen when I put it in gear. When I was waiting in the parking lot I reversed about a car's length and I didn't hear anything. When I put it in first to pull forward I didn't hear anything but after I started rolling forward I heard that loud clunk again.

It seems to happen independent of braking and steering. No clunking noises when turning the wheel all the way left and right while sitting.

I know no one is psychic, but any thought as to what it could be? Gonna get it checked out tomorrow obviously but I thought I'd post something.

I had a high flow cat that started to clank from the inside. Thought I had messed up my engine because it sounded like it was crank related but the internals of the cat came loose. I pulled it off took a pipe and a hammer to it and now it's pretty much a test pipe.

Clunk might be Wheel related, like cv joints. Jack up wheels and check for play

Drove the car a half mile last night. Every 5-10 seconds there would be a loud metal on metal clank sound and I would feel the car shudder when I heard the noise.

stop driving that thing...jack it up and get underneath...sounds suspension/drivetrain related...did it happen when you hit bumps or just randomly?

Randomly.

Shop just called me, it's coming from the rear diff.

Might see if I can just find a used one. Options for rebuild maybe?

Well if it's your rear diff, is the clunking because it isn't enforced properly to the car or an internal issue?

1/2 to removing it. 99% sure it's internal. I'll post some pics once I have the cover off
