Unhappy Evo VIII Dreams Shattered!

I have been browsing the forums on this site for quite a while now and also the ones on Nasioc.com. I have carefully been analyzing many threads regarding both the Evo and STi. I also decided to test drive both vehicles, since people's opinions on internet sites should not ultimately be my purchase decision. I had been leaning toward the Evo for the last three weeks. The number ONE reason I did not want to purchase the Evo was the clutch and all the warrany denials. I do not drag race and therefore knew that abusing the clutch would defenitely cause it to fail. Despite many idiots being out there, the number of reported clutch failures was still too high to be considered in any way ordinary. The reports of Mitsubishi dealers voiding warranties if you put in an aftermarket clutch (at your own expense) or stalking people at race tracks also really hurt the Evo's case. I was getting ready to purchase an Evo and called up the service department to ask what they would think of me putting an intake or exhaust on the vehicle. They immediately told me that it would void the warranty. He also told me that Mitsubishi had been sending a great deal of info lately to dealers about ways to void the warranty. He said that even as the Service manager he could not authorize any work on Evo's without Mitsubishi's approval. He told me that Mitsubishi is making it very difficult to do any kind of warranty repair on the Mitsubishi Evo and will try to blame anything after-market for any kind of failures. I know many of you out there are going to talk all kinds of bogus crap about how I am not buying the car for the warranty, that if they deny any warranty work to get a lawyer, take the fight to Mitsubishi, "they cant do that to you", you should realize it has a bad clutch/it has a great clutch but you are bad stick-shift driver, you should expect this kind of quality and treatment. To all of those types of individuals, you must have money pouring out of every orifice and additionally have a lot of free time on your hands to deal with lawyers, district representatives, service department @$$holes, etc. Your analogy for trying to re-assure yourself of making a great decision on purchasing a vehicle with definite issues from a horrible manufacturer with a $hit warranty is equal to saying that who cares if your girl is a total ***** to you who treats you like $hit because atleast she is hot-looking. I really loved the Evo's handling and its looks more than the STi. I am not saying that the Evo is worse than the STi or vice-versa. It is just that with one of them I can reasonably rest assured that the manufacturer will take care of me and the car. It wasnt the Evo itself that has now made me decided not to purchase it, it was Mitsubishi itself and I hope it burns in hell for bringing us such a great car but making it such misery to keep. I know I am going to get flamed, so I am putting the fire-proof clothes on. I think you guys are great and wish you best of luck with your Evos. I would still like to see any feedback you guys might have. I hate Mitsubishi!

Bumsarama - You definetly bring up valid points. Warranty is a HUGE incentive to buy a car or not. I knew this was an issue so what I did was buy a 3rd party warranty. I didn't buy the warranty just because I knew Mitsu wouldn't cover anything on the car (8,000 miles now and it hasn't had to go in once yet) but because I wanted a longer warranty and Mitsu's was way too expensive. I got a 7yr/100,000 warranty for like $1200. I asked them right away about mods and what they said was that mods would not be warrantied, but original parts would be. So I like to think of it as protecting my investment.

If I cared about Warrantee and if my car broke and I could not fix it then you have to be a dumbass to buy it, got something that costs less.

strange took my EVO to the dealer i bought it from to get the door fixed which somehow get recessed ( the door was ****ed up). I went with my Turbo timer on , and my exhaust. The mitsu rep showed up to look at my car apologized to me for a another dealer refusing to look at it. didnt say anything about my exhaust or turbo timer.took him about 5 minutes for him to look at my car. They gave me a loaner. Fixed my door no problem. you have to realize that these dealers are indepent. Also if you buy anycar and mod the hell out of it the warranty will be voided. Oh by the way when my brother first got his WRX when they first came out. The clutch was shot with no mods. They refused to fix it. After haggling etc......... It got fixed. YOur forming a conclusion of a car you never owned.

Warrenty is nice till you mod that is the main key. If subbi check out your clutch and see's glazing on the disc they will charge your *** in a heartbeat just like mitsu. Subi will freaking void warrenty for a bov even. There is no perfect car out there, simple as that. They all have problems and have dealers trying to make money instead of paying it out on repairing vehicles. But I am in no way flaming, every one has there opinon and veiw of a situation. I just wish the warrenty was more soild than hear say ,he say situations. All dealers are equal IMO. Ive been to dodge forums, subi forums, chevy forums all that good stuff and they all say the same thing. My clutch is still strong for now, knock on wood

you have laws protecting ur little *****. if mitsu wants to deny your warrenty the burden of proof is on them, if they cannot prove that the problem was caused by a specific mod, you can easily fight this. if you think those people saying that stuff have soo much money your completely wrong. you act like subaru does not doing anythign like scouting out at tracks (maybe not as much but they will oid your warrenty even if they find out u participate in such events). your wrong they do it as well. if u have the ***** to argue with a service manager u'll get what you want. if not get the bbb involved and ur chances jump alot. being scared of a performance car breaking mean the car is not for you. although i do not own one yet , i will own an 04 whenever they first arrive, and the warrenty mines almost nothing to me. i've been fighting dealers long enough and almost every single time i've won. you must be persistant and be serious, otherwise ur lookin to be buttraped.

You make very good points. The truth of the matter is that if the car is stock they will fix it under warrenty. If they don't you might have to spend some time, but a simple phone call or email would do to the right person. Now adding after markect parts are a diffrent story all together. Doing somthing like a intake could hurt the motor. (some intakes run lean because of MAF Voltage correction). Now how would that be fult that you srewed it up by adding a part that was not ment to be there and in turn damaged the motor. Also adding a aftermarket Clutch as long as it's OEM or =. So adding a twin disk unit would not = OEM. But a nice Exedy replacement would be fine and you will retain your warrenty.

I don't think is that bad.

I never had a problem as of yet.. Also I feel if you can afford to Mod your car you can aford to fix it if it brakes. I personal can afford to fix it when it brakes and perpared to do so. Now enjoy the STI Subaru in Gernal is a great car company. I had a wrx before the EVO and they do things other auto companies do not.

Some very good points were made. I for one have not had any problems besides the cluthch. I had to spend about $900 with install to have my ACT clutch with flywheel installed. I love the car so much I don't care about dealing with dealers. I just say **** 'em. I don't have a lot of money make about $40,000 a year with many other bills. I just have to say I would not let any one push my choice one way or another. Sure if something bad happens I would be very pissed, buth until them **** 'em. That is
