oil from ac compressor?

I'm just curious
I took the ac out the other day. And when I laid down the compressor on the ground there was what seemed like engine oil type fluid coming out of the compressor.
I was just wondering if this was normal. Is this for the clutch?
Do I have to fill this compressor back up with oil when I'm reinstalling it?

A/C systems do require a set amount of PAG oil to be injected when recharging the refrigerant. So yes, it is normal to see it leaking out of your compressor. I'm guessing you had a shop recover your refrigerant, if you had it done right, ha. They should know what to do when recharging your system as well.

The oil is mixed with and circulates with the refrigerant. So, you would expect to find some in the compressor, some in the condenser, some in the evaporator and some in the lines. It is there to lubricate the compressor internals and must be compatible with the refrigerant used.

Old thread bump ftw lol. If you get a used AC compressor, how do you know how much oil to add?

Drain the new compressor then add spec amount.
And stop buying used compressors, new ones are like $100 aftermarket and work fine.
