I originally posted in the electrical section but no one replied so I hope someone here has a clue.

So it rained a bit here and there in the past week and in the morning the rain freezes over. But it wasn't until I was driving home from work approx 8 hours later so the car had plenty of time to dry or what not because it hasn't rained for the rest of the day. During my commute home my wipers had a mind of it's own. The wipers are going off while the switch is in the off position and when i turn the wipers on, they slow down. If I use the sprayer it works at normal speed. At one point during my 30 min commute home they got stuck halfway across the windshield and the switch doesn't do jack. It would also go off while the car is off.

So I check the wiring by the wheel well and inside the cabin. Crazy thing it's dry, and sealed. Of course of 2 days of these symptoms, it happens to go away after doing all that work so my only guess is the wiper motor.

Anyone got suggestions but this thing comes back with a vengeance?

Sounds exactly what use to happen on my s-10 when the wiper motor was dying. That would be your best bet, could always grab a test light/volt meter and check it.

Wires may look dry but my money is 100% on corrosion in the junction block connectors.

Do yourself a favor and hard solder those wires

 

I don't own an evo so I'm not aware if it has one but I had the exact same issue with my old jeep. It ended up being something called the ignition wiper pulse unit or something like that. Just replaced the box and it worked, where as before the wipers wouldn't ever really shut off they would kind of stutter step and would only work in high and had a mind of their own. It has something to with wiper control when they are on any intermittent setting.

Also; in my experience a screwy ignition switch can cause all sorts of weird things with steering column controls.

 

You had better check on this!

 

If they're going on when the car is completely off, there's a grounding issue somewhere.

 

Check all your connectors in the kick panel, that's where your problem is! Clean the connectors if they are not fully corroded, if they are fully corroded out you might have to bypass a few wires around the connector. Do it before it makes your fuel pump quit on you

 

This is the first thing I did...The connectors arn't corroded. The Seal is dry, We even took out the little box of wires under the fender, that's completely dry also. Only wire that is wet would be the turn signal but no corrosion.

 

This is something I might have to look into when it happens again.

 

It is possible that the short can be inside the coiling of the motor itself. I'm actually dealing with one of these said electrical gremlins on a particular type of Swedish car that isn't known at all for it's electrical issues

But after 25 odd years, what can you expect...

Anyway... you can use one of those green scrubby things, to make sure you're getting good solid clean contact with the grounds.

Post up what you find out if anything...

Thanks for all the help guys! I truly hope it doesn't come back cause I had to remove the fuse to drive, and one of those 2 days it actually rained...FML right? haha, anyway if I do find the problem I will keep you guys updated.

 

Fwiw... I wouldn't "stop" looking for this problem. Electrical shorts are serious fire hazards. And you'll never be able to put it out before it gets out of control.

 

It's kinda hard to look for a short if it's not shorting out. My father who's a master tech says it's kinda pointless to look for a problem if it's not happening. We checked the fender and kick panel and nothing was wrong nor wet. We took a look at the wiper motor but it was working fine at that point so I don't have much of an option until it happens again.
