Key question?/?
Key question?/?
i only have 1 key for my evo 8 gsr and i dont want to pay 200 to a dealership for a key and fob. i have heard of people using other keys and just getting them cut such as a vw flip key how do you do that? how do u program it any information would be helpful sorry for the wierd question
keys are cheap, programming them is expensive
also, if you buy a key from another manufacturer you'd have to buy one that would be able to communicate with the Evo, and i have no idea how you'd determine that

The key is a transponder key. It needs to be cut AND programmed into the car. No you cannot use a VW key as most are not transponder keys, and the ones that are, are not in the mitsubishi frequency range.
Key Fobs can be found cheap on Ebay and can be programmed yourself (there are instructions on here)
programming CAN be expensive.
Call around. I was first quoted $65 for a key and $130 for the programming. I then called around, and most wanted $50 for the key and between $80 and $130 for the cut and programming.
I just got the key for $45 from mitsubishipartswarehouse.com and had the key programmed for $60 at max maden mitsubishi in downers grove, IL. It took them less than 15 min to cut and program the key.
Now there is an aftermarket option.... where you can buy an aftermarket key, and have the transponder code of your EXSISTING key copied onto this aftermarket key... However, this is typically as expensive or more than getting an OEM key cut and programmed to the car... also this leaves only one working transponder code for your car...
You will want to have two unique (and working) transponder codes/keys, as once you have two working (different code) keys, you can program more on your own.

Agreed, call around.
I only charge $45 to program (minimum labor charge), and if the car is in for other work of any significance I'll often do it free. It takes literally about 60 seconds to program, charging $130 is ridiculous.
Also, there's a seller on ebay pushing evo keys for $5-9 each depending on quantity. I've bought a few from them and haven't had an issue yet.

These are a locked transponder code, correct? not a programmable key?
I need an uncut transponder key to use in a future alarm install.

Sure, here's a link to the last set I bought a few weeks ago (it went down a buck since last month).
They sell them in huge lots too.
