Powder Coating Thread
Sorry I been absent from the thread for this week, its been a bad week for me. But those calipers and valve cover look great. Also great for showing the same kind work you can do with custom paint, can be applied to powder coating.
Some plastics can withstand the heat involved when powder coating. The composite intake manifolds of a lot of cars are frequently powder coated. However, a lot of people attempt to powder coat their wheel center caps to match their powder coated wheel, and those usually will melt. Most plastics have their "grade" marked on the back and you can look it up to see what type of plastic it is made out of and see what its temperature rating is.
The way you actually powder coat plastic is by heating up the plastic to around 175 degrees, then pulling it out of the oven and spraying the powder. The powder will stick to a warm part like that. Then when you are done, you can place it back in the oven for the full cure.

This is my spending breakdown for the non-consumable items needed when I started powder coating:
-60gallon air compressor $275 - craigslist
-craftsman powder coating gun $44 - amazon (other really cheap options are harbor freight gun at $67 and eastwood at around $100, a nice mid-level gun is the Redline EZ50 at $350, I plan to switch to this gun eventually)
-blast cabinet $75 - Craigslist
-2 household ovens - free - craigslist (I will eventually combine them into 1 larger oven)
-Garage electrical circuit for compressor an oven - $75 - lowes (would be cheaper online)
-Infrared thermometer $30
-ground rod and materials $20
-air hoses, fittings, water traps ~$100 - harbor freight
-silicone plugs to mask holes $15 for a 50pack
-high-temp tape -free samples from epsi
consumables:
Powders(lb) run about $10-$15 each (allpowderpaints.com , powder365.com , prismaticpowders.com)
denatured alcohol is about $15/gallon (walmart)
I use either super clean or simple green extreme to clean ~$7 to ~15/gallon
I use black diamond coal slag from Tractor Supply to blast with its $7/50lbs.

Thanks guys, new article on the site for those who are interested. It covers more masking techniques. http://www.powdercoatguide.com/2013/...g-part-ii.html
Heres a new article on my powder coating site. It explains a lot about air compressors, make sure you read it if you are in the market for one.

having my calipers powder coated. This thread is great! I think I may try my hand at this in the future. I love the idea of coating all of the brackets and pieces parts that normally just get ignored. Thanks 99!
No problem at all. I actually started powder coating after calling a local shop to quote me for my calipers. It would have been $200 for all 4 after I disassembled them. I knew I wanted everything powder coated and if the calipers were going to cost $200 alone then everything in the car would have been $2000+. I haven't even spend 1/4 of that on my current setup. It is definitely more economical to do it yourself.
