But remember, all EVO owners are professional WRC drivers and they have to stick to 2.0 engine for homologation purposes.

Other than that and the 2.5 liter engine, the US spec STi and Spec C are similar. Heck, we even got the thinner Spec C glass and thinner Spec C roof top (though no roof vent).

So you can change the springs and sway bars. It's not really a big deal.
Another big factor is the Spec C is a lighter car (without driver I remember it's just under 3000 lbs).
Remember the weight in Japan is measured dry when in US it's wet. And some extra creature comfort is adding weight. EG. power windows and big (and sucky) seats with side air bags are not helping.
What also helps it a lot on track is that it has a 13:1 steering ratio compared to the Evo.
You can change it as well.

Any EVO owners driven an STI?
Greettings, just joined this forum today, hope to have an EVO in my driveway by tomorrow evening. I have gone back and forth between geeting an EVO and an STI, but have decide on the EVO for a couple of reasons, the most important one being that I believe it is more of a pure driver's car than the STI. However I have never driven either so that is just my opinion based on reading reviews and communicating with people on forums such as this. I was curious however if anybody has driven both and what their opinion was on the cars after that.
Many times Its a great car. I love subarus in general and Had a highly modded wrx. Saying that the EVO is the best all around car I have driven, goes fast for cheap and IMHO kicks the STis ****. down 30 HP/30 TQ (which is a lot of useable power) and it still creams it
Amazing car
