That's quite surprising. I've driven WRX's and STi's on the track, as have many of my friends who are also driving instructors. We all agree that the WRX and STi just keep understeering like crazy. You enter the turn and understeer. You keep pressing the gas, you REALLY understeer. You lift and get back on the gas and you still understeer. The only way to get the STi to oversteer was to give it a flick...which is obviously not something you're going to do on a road circuit! Besides, the STi is so messy on the limit that you just can't throw it around like that with any real confidence. You can't take the same liberties with it as you can with the Evo.
The Evo, by contrast, has some initial understeer on turn in (which I understand can be dialed out by careful alignment), then transitions to neutral when you apply more throttle. It may have a 50:50 torque split to start, but once you get it turned in and get on the gas it seems to send ALL it's power to the rear wheels. You can really throttle steer this car! If you really want to get crazy, the "lift-turn-get on the throttle" trick gets the back to step out nicely and sets you up for a smooth drift. The car has so much poise on the limit that you can really fool around without getting into too much trouble.

well i definitely can't say i have much experience in either of the two, i havent even had the evo 2 weeks, and that was my first real run with it yesterday.. and just the one quick run up the hill with the STi.. but i definitely agree with you about how you can't take the same liberties with it as the evo! maybe it was just how i was driving it yesterday, but definitely could feel the back end getting out on me.. its also stage 1 sti, so quite a bit more power than mine.. but next time i take it out i'll try and feel it out some more.. it really was too quick to really get a good idea.... (5 mins up a twisty hill).. also just curious what you mean by 'lift'
thanks!!!

I did manage to test drive the STi Version 8 for about a half hour. To say that it's better than the Evo or equal would be unfair though the sound of the boxer engine has a lovely beat to it. However, the turbo lag is very noticeable and in terms of handling and outright power the Evo is better. The Evo makes for a very good everyday car as well as a track day blasting car. The STi is noticeably smaller in size as well. I'd go for the Evo any day.

STI
The sti got grunt and you can feel it instantly, steering feels a bit heavy, the spoiler is alot taller than evo, understeer is noticable @ test drive.
evo
You can throw the steering wheel left to right and the evo will follow, spoiler is not as high as sti but still blocks your way, and you wont feel power until 3000 rpm.

i can dial out understeer in my sti by messing with the dccd(driver controlled center diff) if you put more power to the back, fwd, lock it, or put it in auto there are worlds of difference in handling . i don;t think alot of people even use it in handling tests.not to mention lowering 1.5 inches made a HUGE difference as well...both are great cars. it's funny someone mentioned it's smaller, i never really noticed until i parked next to a white evo yesterday, looks like you guys got more room inside
if you plan to mod right away, i say go evo, alot more available as of now. ...as for the spoiler, got rid of mine and went spoilerless.

"If i wanted a car for everyday driving, i'd choose the audi [s4 i think], then subaru, then the mitsubishi.........BUT, were not talking about vacum cleaners here...were talking about FUN [points straight at the EVO8] with a capital E. So it would be that one[ The evo8] ..BY A MILE"
