Vin verification for modified vehicles

I'm a California resident looking to purchase a built evo from Nevada. It has a turbo kit etc. I'm not worried about smog because we all have a "guy." What I am worried about is the DMV told me that if I purchase a vehicle out of state that I have to get a "VIN VERIFICATION." Are they going to send me to CHP when they see that this car is heavily modified?

This is the form:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg31.pdf

Please give me your input as to what kind of hassle I can expect from the DMV representative who does the VIN verification. Thanks.

I my state a certified inspection mechanic cab sign the paperwork or you take a chalk rubbing of the VIN with you and that verifies the VIN. I would look on the California dmv website.

Never heard of something like this. Is this a requirement when you buy cars outside of California?

That should read "In my state" I am from Pennsylvania. I did read the office and it looks like a state certified smog inspector can verify the VIN. If you have a guy they can take care if you.

Update:

For those registering an out of state built/heavily modified car I have good news. The dmv didn't even ask me to pop my hood. The vin on the engine doesn't match because I have a 4g64 and he wasn't even the wiser. Now I just need to see my smog buddy...
