what the?… something stalled?

Hi guys,

was driving home from work today a 26 mile drive…

at one round-about (you guys call it "rotary")… about 1.5 miles from home. i Slowed down to a stop and then engaged the clutch and turning the steering slightly to pass the round about...

the steering felt like it froze…. as if the power steering turned off..

instantly i was thinking "****, the car stalled and the power steering turned off… **** **** the car is gonna T-bone me…quick"

but when i revved, the idle was there. And instantly the heavy steering vanished like a ghost.

anyone else experienced this?

the car has had a 29,000 mile, full service… all fluids incl AYC, Transmission & Differential oils changed.

hmmmmm

If your steering got stiff and the car went quiet, my bet is on electrical. Sounds like your car experienced an electrical power loss. Did you get feeling back in the wheel by putting the car in gear? (Clutch released) or did you rev in neutral (clutch in) and get feeling back? If you got it back when releasing clutch I bet the effect was similar to popping clutch for restart. If not, I don't know what else it could have been.

I'm pretty sure i clutched in and gave it a rev and it must of came back

it happened that quick, and i had the radio going and the exhaust is stock… so on the noise part, i wasn't aware.

Electrical as in the alternator?

I've checked the tension on the alternator belt as well as the power steering belt…they seem fine….

I'm thinking more like the car died and you clutch started when you let go. I have only had problems like this once before, in an Integra. There was something wrong with the wiring in that car. At first, I was thinking that you might have the same problem but if it only happened once, and the car still starts and drives with no issue, then your alternator and starter should be fine. Does the car have mods beyond bolt ons? Like cams, or any internals?

Ok, I have a thought. There are some wires and harnesses in the steering column that can cause power cut and non starts. I think one may have twisted during the turn in the roundabout. Pop your steering column and make sure the smaller lower connection is straight and tightly in place. When they move or twist, they can cause these problems and will not throw any codes. These connections are pretty sensitive, especially to downward pressure.

I recommend making sure your car is good to go before you take it in for the tune. It would be safer for the car and your wallet.
