first time at the track with the ix

So I went to the track tonight and am still trying to figure out the best way to launch this thing my best time was a 13.3 at 106.91 mph with a 1.974 60ft but I also ran a 14.181 at 107.33 with a 2.616 60ft . I have a compition stage 2 clutch and it seemed like it was getting hot and slipping a few times. It's only got 3k miles on it but felt spungy some runs and felt like I had to force it into gear. No grinding or noises just had to push hard. I tryed running out 4th and not shifting to 5th but hit the Rev limiter at 8200 right before the line. I'm running 245/45r17 re11's so traction wasn't a problem just couldn't figure out how to launch it right I guess. I come from rwd cars so the evo is my first awd. I just think it's weird not sure if it's a clutch issue or what.

I haven't tried it in my 9 yet but I found with my Evo 6 which had an AP Triple plate clutch the best launch came from around 5500-6000 rpm and then drop the clutch any higher and it slipped.

How high are you revving before launch??

I tryed bouncing it off the two step at 5500 but it wheel hopped and popped out of first gear I ran a 14.7 at 102 and I smelled clutch so I didn't do that again my best run was launching at 3500

If you drag the clutch too much it will slip like a ****, once it starts its hard to stop.

Launching a mostly stock Evo is a pause (load the drivetrain) and a release as you let out the clutch.
If you pause for too short it will bog, if you pause for too long you'll ride it, slip the poo out of it.
This is the best way I can describe it.

Another tactic I've done is not using the two step, release the clutch a hair until the drivetrain gets loaded and transition from the clutch to the throttle, finding that fine line where the car wants to bog.

Went and ran 1/8th mile yesterday to practice my launch. Did better but every launch felt different traction wise could not find the best launch managed a 1.7 60ft best and ran a 8.2 also ran a few 1.8 60ft so got a little better. Now my transfer case is leaking a little on the right side so don't know if it's from launching or not.

no it looked like where the outer case bolts to the transfer case. Not the output shafts seal

Sounds like you just need more seat time in a awd man. I'm sure you will get there. I remember the last time I went to the track I ran the same time 4 runs in a row without adjusting anything. I thought that was pretty consistent for a 5 speed let alone a evo haha.

What are your upgrades? I took mine to the track last year for the first time and went from a 13.4 to 13.0 just by getting used to launching it haha

3 inch exhaust, megan o2 housing, ets 4 inch intercooler and licp. Injen upper and intake pipe, turbo smart bov, and a tune it was putting down 330 330 before the o2 housing and intercooler and switching to ets licp so I don't know what it's putting down now it's at 25 psi boost.

I read for every 10th you take off the 60ft you take off 2 10th's off the quarter so if I could get a 1.5 60ft it would be 12.9

I ran my first IX MR at the track when it was stock and did a 12.82 @ 107.41 with a 1.8 60'. Best way to launch the car is to put it in first, find the clutch engagement point to preload it, and just hold it there. Then floor the gas and use the stock 2 step. Slip the clutch until you feel it grab, then dump it. Don't take your foot off the gas until it's time to shift. That's the way I've always launched all of my EVO's. I only took my first one to the track 3 times to prove to people I could break 12's in it stock. I ran 13.6 the first time I took it, then 13.0 the second time, then 12.9 and backed it up with a 12.8 the third visit. I'm an autocrosser though, so after that I just kept autocrossing and left the straight line stuff to my other friends.
