Built not bought.
Built not bought.
lately I've been getting a hard time from people because I'm doing a full engine build with turbo kit and im having a local shop do the work. So my question is why is that such a big deal to people? How many of you actually do all of your own work? I guess it would have been cool to do some of the work but I really don't have the spare time for that. It's not like I'm going to hate driving it because I didn't put the parts in.
You just answered your own question. Like yourself, theres many people out there that have the experience tondo the job. Just don't have the time to get it done, so why not hire another professional to do it!?
I do all my own work except for machine work and tuning. With that being said I know how to tune, but would rather pay someone to do it who is better and enjoys doing it. So I can relate to paying for something rather than doing it. And the whole built not bought saying is stupid. You have to buy the parts one way or another so it should be, bought and built or just bought. lol
Lol.... Its called hate.... People gonna hate on you no matter what you do. If you built it yourself you would hear...."o those rods are gonna break on you or those wrist pins are gonna snap in to a million pieces...." Or my personal favorite.... " i know this guy who knows a guy and his evo puts out more horses than yours...." In the end you just have to remember who gives a flying ef what other people say. It aint their car, they aint driving it and it wasnt built for thei appproval. Enjoy your car!!
I am in the same boat. I don't know who has the time to do all that work without enjoying their evo. I don't have the tools to do all that work and I can place money to where it should. I enjoy doing things I can do but if I have to get the work done. So be it.
1 wife 3 kids 1 job and a thing called life. Hard to find spare time to think of doing the labor intensive work.
The saying is for younger guys who have the time of day to get it done...More power to them! 2 sides of a coin and as you get older and learn, grass is not always greener on the other side.

The really funny part of it all is that most of the guys jumping up and down about that don't know their left from their rt hand and like arm chair ball players--are just regurgitating what someone else said without knowing any of the details that make it work--LOL.. The 4G63 seems to have its share of quirks so I would say not for the faint of heart to build--then again not just for any shop to put together either. For you " A man needs to know his limitations" and at least your there. Good luck.
I've been a mechanic for over 20 years, and when it comes time to do my clutch, if money permits, I will gladly pay a competent shop to do the work. it is no fun to do this clutch on the floor, on your back. however, I did just do the 120k, and all the bolt on stuff, just because i'm cheap, and the money I saved in labor, I was able to buy a few more things for the car that it needed. I will probably be doing the clutch myself also, but dammit. i'm trying not to.
I do all my own work/tuning. But I also have a lift, welder, tools etc. My father has a machine shop (not car type machining) that I also have access to as long as I'm not in his way.
I think it's important for people to do as much work as they can (space, tools, knowledge, time all being limiting factors). I think you appreciate it more when you wrench / fabricate / tune the car yourself. I think it's also somewhat of a bragging right, and you also save money.
However, getting in over your head can cost you dearly, so there is no reason to take on more than you can do. In the end... it's whatever... people should be passionate about something in life, doesn't have to be working on cars, maybe it's racing them, maybe it's not car related at all. Just put out the effort to be good at something during your time here!

The definition of that to me means, buying a car that's already been built tuned or buying a pretty much stock car and doing the build your way, no matter if doing it yourself or paying shop to do it for you
I know a little bit about how cars work, how to upgrade them and fix them etc. Anything I don't know I can research... but I wouldn't have a clue how to action that! I couldn't replace the clutch or remap my car. I have neither the expertise or the time!
Why risk damaging my beloved car from a rookie error when I can have someone who knows what they're doing do it? Its still my car and work I've done on it??

IMO Adding the parts is 80% of the joy and satisfaction I get from saying yeah, I made this from top to bottom. You are never going to learn anything by having others do it for you. I don't hate on people who drive cars they know nothing about except it goes fast. Some people seem to do it for a status symbol to be the coolest cat, and then they will move on to the next thing. Most others do it because they enjoy racing and the whole experience of owning a modified sports car.
Never the less, the argument will stand the test of time. People with less money will argue one way and people that are more fortunate will argue the other way. I don't see that changing. At the end of the day its your car you worked hard for so eff the haters.

I agree. To each it's own though in my opinion. I had MAP build my motor only because it's difficult to source specialty tools in Italy, everything else was done by me. But I find it a lot of fun doing my own work but then again I have the time and skillset (I build Jet engines for a living).
