You live in san fran- I'm positive that you still smell after getting out of the car. Ask a friend if you don't believe me.

Our cars run pig rich from the factory. Your car would probably thank you for ditching the cat. LOL
I don't notice the smell in my car even sitting in traffic with windows down. The only time I even noticed the smell of exhaust was when my turbo was pushing oil I could smell the burnt oil.
Exhaust with a cat smells 10x worse to me then catless anyways. But I grew up riding motorcycles so I'm very used to it..

Only negatives of being catless is the smell if you have a new girlfriend, but she'll probably hate the harsh ride of the EVO anyway so it's just a part of the charm, and inspection. If those aren't a concern for you then obviously there's no drawback.
Catless on both my Evo's, girlfriend can't even tell. I guess she's a keeper
What does living in San Francisco have to do with smelling? Anyway, I don't, nor has anyone else who has ever ridden in my car. Can we smell the car? Sure, if we're sitting in traffic with the windows down. Or standing outside the car while it's running. I participate in neither of these activities. So nope, no smell issues for me.
California's moddified car and emossions laws are incredibly strict. As for the original question. Power and cost wise yes its worth it. If worried about noise look into resonated exhausts or a borla hush (if those are produced for evos?) Each state's laws regarding it differ. Although i've read (didnt check the source) getting caught without a cat can be a $4000 fine. Technically high flow cats are still illegal according to the clean air act but those are even harder to detect. In md emissions is supposed to be a mirror check and obd II scan. They never mirror and as long as you dont throw codes youre fine. Other ways around it though, fibbed receipts, car too low for mirror or too low to get into the inspection station in general
smog: OBD-II test and a very strict visual. no more exhaust test.

I'd be interested to know who here has been pulled over for not having a cat, and what the circumstances were leading to (1) getting pulled over; and (2) how the cat issue came up.
+1 on that interest. However, not sure thats possible, maybe upon the cop visually inspecting the vehicle but odds are he/she won't know where they would be or even have a general idea of what a cat looks like. Also, I'm pretty sure they don't have any grounds to pull you over because they suspect you're catless. Now noise probably but again the burden of proof is on them.

but I might be keeping it, because I'm willing to pay the money for the test tube and down pipe etc, but I do not have my own Ecu tuner and there's no way I'm paying 500 for a dyno tune, so I'm sort of stuck
