Paint job

I've been scouting around for shops that do paint jobs. One of them quoted me $6000 and the other $4500 (this guy paints classic cars).

I know there are a lot of owners here that completely changed the color of their car, I want to know what's the average cost of a good OEM quality or better.

There nothing wrong with my paint just a minor dings here and there. I want to change the color to a Formula 1 red. When I bought the car, It was the best deal and not modified during that time. That's why I just went ahead and bought the car.

Some where around $5k+. A complete color change is a lot of work (doing door jams, engine bay, inside the fenders, hood, trunk, etc).

$4500 would be a still if it the guy does good work. On the east coast you're looking at 8-10k easily.

Anything less than $8k is questionable. Per quality goes, Yea you can get the car painted, but they didn't remove and replace the windscreens, trim, etc; they instead just painted up to the tape line. Not acceptable in my book but I know very much everyone has a different outlook. I worked around body shop cars for years. I saw some full repaints that should warrant the car totaled. The more factory paint on the car the more it's worth.

Honestly if the clear isn't chipping away. Just have the car wrapped. $2k-$3k and pick and color you want. Also fully removable incase you don't want chrome or whatever in 5 years. Ahah

I have my very own paint booth (in my garage) and I would never change the color of a car for less than 15k. There is so much involved.

What would you guys say is a fair price to pay for a respray in the original color from a good shop?

I'm not sure if I'm concerned with retaining the stupid purple sparkles in my tarmac black paint. So I don't care about a perfect match, just want the exterior to be consistent.

I'm by no means a paint expert, nor do I know the costs or the man hours involved with changing the color of a car. I cannot fathom anyone paying you $15K to change the color of their car, unless we are talking 24k gold flakes, ghost flames, and some other crazy tricks of the trade. That's ridiculous, but if you do it yourself and for fun, I'd charge out the *** too. Just wouldn't expect anyone to take me seriously to do it. I personally cheaped out and had my Tarmac black car resprayed in the same color. Local guy said he could do it for $1.7K. It took him 2 months of delaying me from picking up the car and me finding things wrong with it. I eventually accepted it as is since he was not getting it done right, and refunded me $200. So for $1.5K I got a crap paint job and a lesson learned. Don't trust internet talk about folks who can paint cars, and a real paint job will easily be at least $3k, if not more.

Solid Advice. Repainting a car well is not cheap. The price of the paint job should dictate how thorough the color change will be.

This. A true color change requires the removal of everything. That is how the shell was painted by the factory and that is how it should be done. 15k is reasonable for the labor involved.

Not to thread jack or anything, but every paint price thread on this forum is for color changing. What seems to be the norm for a good repaint of the same color?

From what I've been quoted and what others have paid, $3-4K would be normal. My family has had a few cars repainted through Maaco specials, ranging in price from $600-900. Great for cars that you don't care about and are turning to sell for a profit. For a car you care about, probably your Evo, expect $3-4K.

Wow that's I bit more than I was thinking. I have clear coat peeling on the front end of the car and am just planning to repaint the entire car. I was thinking between 2,000 and 2,500. Will color affect price?

Probably not. You're mostly paying for labor with body work and paint. The paint and chemicals aren't very expensive all things considered.

If you do it right everything underhood needs to be stripped and cleaned as well. With the exception of some interior parts everything will be removed- Including the glass.

I just painted my dads 65 cutlass 442. It took me about 6 months between body and paint.
