I'm in the process of putting the new timing belt on and I can't seem to get the can gears to line up to top dead center. Any trick to do this? Everytime I try to move them they bounced out of place
They're going to move because the valve springs are being pushed on. You can get cam lockers to hold them in place which is what I use or you can find another way to hold them while you install the belt.
It's definitely a pain in the butt. The tools to hold the cams in place are usually meant to install while the belt is on. Install, swap belts, remove. Since everything is moving, it's a bit tougher. I turn one cam, put the lock in, then use a wrench to turn the other. Having a second person is a huge help.
Good luck, man. It's the biggest pain in the butt, when it comes to putting our engines back together
Set crank to tdc. Set belt on crank. Use paper clips to hold belt.
Put belt on intake cam while moving cam back with a wrench, ziptie so it doesnt move then set exhaust cam and put belt on.
Yup. When I do it on my own, the cams aren't on the marks. I put the belt on, one cam at a time. Everything is lined up, once I'm done.
not sure if that makes sense.
So 8 hours later I got everything buttoned up. Fired it up and it sounded normal enough to my standards. Looked under the car and noticed oil was leaking from the bottom of the engine out of the lower timing cover by the crank ... idk why nothing can ever go smooth with my cars... From what I've read its most likely the tensioner bolts not being tight enough as oil flow behind them. Anything else I should check?
