Hmmm... I'm not the original owner so I'm not going to be getting the recall email/letter. Should I call the dealer, give them my VIN and see if I need to get it done? -Don't know if this is weird but my SRS light turned on 2 weeks ago. Sometimes it turns off on its own but I just find it weird that the light came on and now I'm finding out about this recall....

I doubt they're related chances are there is something else amiss with your system. Either way it doesn't matter that you're the original owner when the car is registered that info is sent over to Mitsu so youll still get safety recalls in the mail. Feel free to call your local dealer as they'll be able to look it up but I wouldn't be surprised if you receive a notice in the mail shortly.

You can also punch your VIN into the NHTSA website. Just google “Takata recall.†Should be the first website that pops up. If your vehicle is an 04-06, it’s subject to the recall.

guys see my post below, I just had it done, all non standard wiring, alarm, Bluetooth, double din and they did it without pulling the dash, I was on their case big time and listed every scratch in and on the car and gave it to the service guy and another copy left taped to the dash for the tech to look at.

Those have not been recalled because 02-03 Lancers used a different igniter than 04-07 which is not affected.
Not to say that they couldn't be in the future, but the design is physically quite different and assumed using a different propellant. Assumed.

PSA: if you're flashed, remind the dealer to leave your ECU alone.

All non-desiccated PSAN inflators have been recalled at this point. And desiccant wasn’t introduced until after 2003, and even then it wasn’t widely used. If you’ve got an 02-03, it is VERY unlikely that you will see your inflator recalled as part of the Takata recall.

Just got the letter tonite. Sadly there are no local Mitsu dealer's that I trust. I'd much rather pull the bag out and take it to them and exchange it, tho I'm sure that will be a no go. Second though....I recall my pops knows the owner of that dealer...guess I'll pursue that avenue.

I would think that is a huge liability for the stealership. Because they have no way of knowing for sure the new airbag was in fact put into the vehicle of the VIN you gave them. It could come back on that dealership in the end.

As some of you have seen, the first wave of mailers has gone out, primarily to those who have not had the original recall performed. Those who already have the original recall performed (and expected risk temporarily lessened) will get a second wave of recall mailers.

For those curious about the new part, here are comparison photos of them, igniters removed from the bags.
The first is the original design (as well as first replacement looks identical). This is an original one, though MUCH cleaner than most. Most of them have thick red rust on the ends.
The second picture is the new vendor design, which you'll notice sheds the metal discharge canister and vent hole design for a composite material.

Thanks aamoedo for the details on 02-03 inflators.

I think I have decided to just pull the dash out myself, and then take them the car. That way they can't **** up but too much. The tech should be happy his job is pie, I will be happy my car isn't fubarred.
