This can't be happening
Seriously, its nothing against you Evo Spec and if I seem like I'm taking it out on your I seriously apologize. If I wouldn't lose the warrenty I would just fix it myself and just be done with this all. Instead the dealer wants to put a whole new short block and charging me over $5200 bucks especially when I can get a brand new motor for a grand less then they are selling it to me from another mitsu shop. Adn actaully if the dealer will nto cover it I will be ripping the whole motor aprt and seeing what the hell did give and posting it on here also to tell a possible weak point. But again I do not mean to take anything out on you or anyone else on this board. I've been on here for awhile but I don't post often at all cause I don't want to start modding the car till the warrenty is up then I will be on alot more.
i understand where ur coming from, and i no u have nothing against me. Dealers are looking out for themselves, and they do it in the most childish ways such as asking for service records. sure they have the right to do that, but i think every evo owner is a car enthusiast who is gonna take care of there baby in every way possible. your just in a ****ty situation right now and i hope u find ur way out on positive terms.
Buddy of mine had the same thing happen with a Suburban. He always did his own oil but couldn't produce proof.. cost him about $5,000 if I remember right. It's not just Mitsubishi. Personally during the first year I let the dealer do it for just this reason even though I could easily do it myself. Gotta save those receipts. When I do it myself I write the date & mileage on the receipt and also save the lid from the oil filter/air filter box.
EVL_VIII, your symptoms don't sound much like rod knock at all. My car has rod knock, and...ouch. If you were to throw a screw in a dryer and turn it on, that's what it sounds like. I have no power, and this horrible sound throughout the revs (to which I can only reach 3~3500 RPM, as missing a cylinder means it doesn't have enough power to spin itself). What you have doesn't sound much like rod knock at all. Also, PM me with the prices your dealership is giving you, and I'll get you the list prices. Also, take it to other dealers, like the one who was going to sell it to you for cheaper. 2825 for a bottom end is bull, that's what it'd cost in canadian dollars, so you should take off about 30%.
Graeme, yeah I have worked on enough DSM's and 3000/Stealths to know that this is not rod knock. I'm rpetty positive its a valve especailly from where and how it sounded when it let go. I called Conicelli, another dealership today that I always get all my mitsu parts from and can get the short-block for $1800 and another $200 for the gasket set. So have to see where the situation goes from there. I know if they won't fix this I will be doing it myself since my warrenty is pretty much shot anyways cause I don't have proper records and if anything else happens like this they will pull the same thing so if they aren't going to warrenty it then no point in letting them do the work and make the money off me. If anything I can start modding it cause I have all these pretty parts sitting in my basement to go on the car when the warrenty is up and maybe I will pick up aqnother short block anyways as a spare. Just wasn't expecting to do this all so quick. Figured I had another year to save up.
Could it possibly be piston slap? I know alot of motors these days are getting pistons with shorter and shorter skirts. The description you gave sounds like it fits if I remember it right.
Are you thinkin' lifter tick? 'cause I might be thinkin' lifter tick. The whole reason mitsu changed designs for the 3G lifters was because of poor oil travel. If there's been some buildup, then maybe it's closed off enough to start ticking? Layman's guess...
Not sure. I know these motors have always had issues with lifters and valves. I don't know. But I'm pretty certain its not rod knock. Its on the top end of the motor. I want to find out though thats for sure.
i'm not bothering to read all of the posts.. but if you changed the oil so often... how are they going to know if you are missing a reciept??? or you could have someone from this site mail you some copies of reciepts... anybody around where you live that has an evo?

Well some interesting tidbit to keep yall up to date....
The district manager called me today and left me a VM (wouldn't give me a number to call back)and told me that they are not going to cover due to lack of reciepts for maintance and cause the oil is black and lumpy (Well if a rod goes and breaks the cylinder wall what do you expect with other fluids going into it). Well I went and got my warrenty book and straight out of the book it says:
"Receipts covering the performance of the maintence services should be retained in the event questions arise concerning maintence. These receipts should be transferred to each subsequent owner of this vehicle. MMNA reserves the right to deny warrenty coverage if the vehicle has not been properly maintained. However, denial will not be based solely on the absence of maintence records."
So what do you think guys? Do I have a case or should I just shut up, suck it up and let them win?

Well I got off the phone with MMNA and they are going to test the oil. I got to call the dealership tomorrow to find out when they can. Also the district manager is supposed to call me back tomorrow so we will see what he says also.
