400-500hp 93 pump gas, rebuild. thoughts and options. please share your thoughts.

Evo 8 motor build.

Should I get the block resurfaced/bored/Honed?

Should I get the head worked on? Ported/resurfaced?

What happened?

The head gasket blew.

I have almost 250k miles on the motor. And I figured why not do the work no instead of opening it apart again later. Everything is stock right now except a walbro255 fuel pump, I believe a set of 650 injectors (previous owners’ word), and an evo 9 turbo. And a Coil on plug set up. act street clutch and pressure plate. Mishimoto radiator hoses and fan.

At the minimum I’m going to replace the bearings, rings, gaskets and hoses that broke due to old age. Depending on the shape of the pistons and depending on what you all recommend. Replace them with stock pistons.

But my overall goals for the car are to make it a fun daily driver about 400-500hp on 93pump gas. I know there’s multiple way of going about this and I know it’s more reliable to build bigger than you need and just tune it back. But should I go with say a MAP rebuild package (https://www.maperformance.com/produc...dsm-7-bolt-evo) or (https://www.maperformance.com/produc...dsm-7-bolt-evo) just options not completely set on a product or dealer. Up for discussion.

Head: beehive springs with titanium retainers. What spec valves? what cam would be the best for the build?

In regards to turbos I’m thinking either ball bearing fp54Green or the ball bearing fp black.

Parts I have in boxes from an old build;

Hks ti exhaust

Skunk 2 intake mani (I know multiple people have told me that I should just sell it cause 1 I don’t need it for my power range, 2 stock one works great, 3 people had issues with installation of it in early models)

Skunk 2 68mm throttle body (again people have said I don’t need it for my power range and that it’ll make the responsiveness worse)

An unknown make, exhaust mani. (ill add a pic)

And I have a fake tial wastgate provided by the previous owner #SN05102033 (http://tialsport.com/authenticity)

So, what would you all recommend to get to where I’d like to go?

I think you should give English racing a call for getting the block/Head rebuilt. If you're debating between the green and black, the red will spool a little faster than the black and get you to the power goals.

+1 to English Racing for the build if you're looking for a reputable shop.

500hp on 93 pump - I'd want displacement to compensate for the big turbo. 2.2L at minimum.

X3 on ER,

-4857392947292 to the 294855749392 power on MAP.

2.2L, MHI FP red, S2 cams. Call it a day. Don't even need to port the head. Just do Ferrea or GSC valves and bronze guides.

What other guys said. 2.2 for earlier spool and better power output on 93pump gas. I do not know if an FP Black turbo will get you 500whp but I bet that the new g30 turbos will easily exceed that. Regarding the head, an s2 and spring retainer kit would be ok. I do not know the limits of the oem valves though. About fuel setup you will need at least 1000cc injectors. If you decide at some point to do e85, buy something larger to have headroom for later. A 450wally or even better a 525 fuel pump will get you there. E85 is a different story.

thank you all for the comments. Can any experienced engine builder explain why I shouldn't/can't slap a new head gasket (and other gasket, bolts, and fluids) on my motor and call it a day? just wanted to ask.

The head needs to be resurfaced at a minimum.
