Water Temp Sensor Location

Is anyone running a water temp guage? Where does the sensor mount? I got my VDO guages from 42 Draft Design and need to know where to mount this sensor, for VW they recommend getting a inline mount for the radiator hose. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks this is what I was leaning to, just thought I would see if there was something I was missing.

Easier and effective way is to just tee off the stock sensor location which right underneath the top hose next to the water outlet to the thermostat housing. No need to cut hoses.

What do you use to tee off the stock sensor? This is my first guage install, never needed any in my SE-R.

Assuming your aftermarket temp sensor is 1/8NPT, which most are a 1/8NPT brass fitting with 1 Male, 2 Female.

are you sure the stock sensor location is a 1/8npt?

seeing how the stock oil plug is 3/8 BSPT, it's likely it's 1/8 BSPT at the radiator end

Could have been BSPT. The NPT went right in without much trouble. Better double check though. I'm only letting people know of another option besides cutting hoses. Another is drilling and tapping right on the thermostat housing itself and putting the sensor there.

bspt has square threads and it's 19 threads per inch

npt has tapered threads and it's 18 threds per inch

you can in theory put enough telfon tape on to make it work.. but i would play on the safe side and check.. if it's bspt, pay the few bucks to get a brass adapter to make it work

That may be and i'm not arguing that point at all, but to me if it fits it fits. I used 3/8NPT for the oil pressure fittings aswell. I later got some BSPT fittings, but the NPT fittings have been working fine I don't want to mess with them.

no doubt it works fine.. i was just mentioning that the thread might be different, so i went and got a bspt -> npt adapter

but npt itself would work, but the sealing (tapered thread in square thread) will have to be good otherwise it will leak

Thanks both of you guys for the info. Just another quick question, where do I get the brass fitting from? Auto parts store? TIA
