EVO in Canada
EVO in Canada
the new mitsu dealer here said they don't know if they will have the EVO8 in January 2003, because mitsu canada don't know if the market is here and they would have to make the EVO7 compliant with the canadian laws... also he thought it may be only the 250hp version... anyway... but he said they will have the EVO9 in 2004, WTF?
iirc the EVO8 is the last lancer based evo, right? the EVO9 will use another base, right?

At my Mitsu dealership here they told me that we will be getting the same Evo 8s as the U.S., but not until late spring or summer. Mind you this is info from a dealer so, I don't even know why I'm posting this.
Evo not coming to Canada
Hey guys
Just want to give you my version of what is happening with the Evo and Canada.
I have done a tremendous amount of research on this calling Mitsubishi Canada and various dealerships here in Ontario.
The scoop is that the Evo is NOT coming to Canada in 2003. That I know for SURE.
The reason has nothing to do with the market but the fact that the Evo failed the Canadian bumper crash test. (This is what Mitsubishi Canada told me).
The reason may be that the US allows for a minor amount of Damage in a 5MPH frontal test whereas the Canadian standards demand no damage.
Now some of you mentioned that your dealers told you "next year" or EVO IX model. This information is not necessarily true. The bottom line is that Mitsubishi will have to redesign the front end of the car just for the Canadian market so that it will pass the stupid bumper test.
I believe it will be at least a couple of years before we see a redesign from the current generation body style which started with the EVO VII.
Talk about depressing.
I think the EVO is the king of performance when it comes to these types of cars. Lets just say that I have given up hope of the EVO next year and have opted for the STi since I know that car WILL be coming to Canada unless Subaru changes their mind too
.
Sorry to be a pessimist. If anyone has solid info that contradicts mine please post!!!. You'll make my day!

Re: Evo not coming to Canada
BlackSTi, I don't doubt your info. IMHO I don't think it will be too difficult to make the Evo pass Canadian crash regs if you use the Canadian spec Audi TT as an example. All they did to make it pass was to literally stick these bumper extensions on top of the TT's normal bumper caps. It just looks like a wide molding that they tacked on which can't be more than 1.5 cm thick. It doesn't look good but it shows that if a they really want to get the car to pass then you don't need a complete redesign. It is possible
Canada being so new to our market doesn't want to take that chance and extra expense to bring in the Evo for now.
If that is so then BlackSTi I'm with you. STi it is. I don't want to wait any longer

Hopefully another choice
Guys,
Just found out from the boards at imprezawrxsti.com that someone posted a reference to a Mazda 6 MPS (Mazda Performance Series) which will be AWD turbocharged and have greater than 250 HP. Except this one has leather seats ?!.
The car will debut at the Paris Auto Show, so watch for it.
Based on a 2.3L Single turbocharged engine and although only at the concept stage, it may make an appearance here eventually and hopefully entice Mitsubishi to follow suit.
I'm glad to hear different companies are thinking about the same idea.
