Or maybe they deliberately designed the clutch to be weak so that it will take pressure off the tranny. If so, then if you uprgrade your clutch, is that gonna mess with your tranny? Damnit why can't they just make everything ***in bulletproof.

I find this amusing. What does it say about me as I traded my WRX which I had for over 2 years for an Evo in December? I did consider the STI, but there are so many different girls out there and so little time! It was time to change families and not just date the hotter younger sister. That and the Evo had some of the things the Scooby was missing such as handling and feel.

I have great respect for both cars and I wouldn't be surprised if the demographics for buyers of each car was very similar. I will say that most of the STIs I have seen have been driven by young guys and I have seen many more STIs than Evos at the local tracks (Not SOLO2 or Autocross but real track driving). This, however, might just be a local ratio as Boulder seems to by the Subaru capitol of the US. It feels that every other car out here is a Subaru. – another reason I went for the Evo.

I just bought my Evo a couple days ago but I had an 02' WRX wagon for 2 years and I've been working on WRX's/STi's for about 2 years. STi's are NOT experiencing the same number of the problems the Evo is. The STi has a stonger drivetrain, period. The STi just has a better feel of quality all around, period. The only reason why I bought my Evo was because I got a better deal on a new one and it's a great car despite it's cheap quality.

Every Subaru except the STi definitely has a far more fragile transmission than the Evo... Subaru's 5MT sucks. The STi's six speed is stronger.

I have been a member of Nasioc since 1999 (impreza-rs.com, then i-club, now nasioc) and after a lot of research, it appears that the Subaru 2.5L simply cannot make as much reliable power as the 4G63. Even with a 25% displacement advantage and cam-phasing vvt. There are tons of people on here making well over 300HP at the wheels, and take a look around at some STi forums.

As to why I didn't buy? A lot of reasons, but the evo's steering and handling are far better are big ones. I am not modding my car-- my true love is motorcycling. This is a better stock car than an STi. It's possibly a better modified one, too.

While that doesn't prove that the quality is better I think it does show a hint of the truth.

fyi, STi runs with a IHI VF29 turbo, not mitsu turbo.

Actually, the USDM STi runs a VF39 turbo. Great for spoolup but sacrifices top end bigtime.

I don't think anyone will argue that the 4G63 is a more reliable engine than the EJ25. The Evo even comes with a bigger turbo in stock form therefore can make more power with less mods. I disagree about the Evo's handling being "far" better. It's better, but lets not get excited.

There are so many positives/negatives/tradeoffs when comparing each car, it's insane. That's why I left it down to which one I could get a better deal on.

Well i just joined this forum to talk with evo owners and alot of the info i got on the evo i got on the STI forums and it was all respect for the evo they look at the evo as the only other car in thier class and a fellow rally car.We are the only two rally inspierd production cars in the us.Shouldnt we be joining forces and fighting off those cobras and srts that keep bashing us both.
As far as the STI i have no problems with the car and all the people i know have none eather fit in finish is awsome on the 05.I love both cars and came close to getting a evo.

I think the turbo confusion was coming from the fact that the standard WRX uses a Mitsubishi TD04L.

My friend has a STI it's an awesome car, i just like driving my EVO the feel is better IMO.. before i bought my EVO i test drove both carz, i leaned more on the EVO's driving experience. They are both beasts in their own way, STI's are made very well though.

STI owners aren't having too many problems. They had detonation when they first came out but that has since been solved. A few high HP STI's blew motors, but other than that there are no widespread issues that I know of.

Bad service and voiding warranties is an individual issue. It doesn't neccessarily reflect on the EVO. It all depends on who you talk to, what dealership you go through, etc. Some Subaru dealers void warranties, some don't. It all depends. However Subaru includes a free SCCA membership with the purchase of an STI, but if you race it, your warrantee is void. So it all depends.

Overall, You'll still have some lemons like all cars but there aren't any big issues with either car on reliability.

Yes, the STI has better quality in some areas, but that doesn't reflect on its reliability.
Well SAID!
