Reliability: Evo vs STi
Reliability: Evo vs STi
There seems to be a lot of problems with the Evo whether or not it's your fault.
Are STi owners having the same problem with their car?
ie: reliability issues, dealer *******s, voiding warranties, tranny, drivetrain, clutch etc etc...
After all the problems you have with the car, honestly, do you still feel it is worth it?

Most of the problems I have seen are individual. The clutch is mainly the widespread thing. It's weak to save the rest of the drivetrain. Also, the transfer case has gone bad on some people's cars. These are the main problems I see, even thought I have neither problem. (stock clutch 32k miles).
STI owners aren't having too many problems. They had detonation when they first came out but that has since been solved. A few high HP STI's blew motors, but other than that there are no widespread issues that I know of.
Bad service and voiding warranties is an individual issue. It doesn't neccessarily reflect on the EVO. It all depends on who you talk to, what dealership you go through, etc. Some Subaru dealers void warranties, some don't. It all depends. However Subaru includes a free SCCA membership with the purchase of an STI, but if you race it, your warrantee is void. So it all depends.
Overall, You'll still have some lemons like all cars but there aren't any big issues with either car on reliability.
Yes, the STI has better quality in some areas, but that doesn't reflect on its reliability.

Stock STI's have since been fixed with the detonation issues. The very first productions to hit our shores had it, but that has been fixed.
Modded to modded though, a newly designed engine is definately a risk, as it doesn't have any previous models to test how it responds to mods. The EVO's engine has had time to prove itself to mods (GSX, previous EVO's, etc.).

subie gives you free membership to SCCA? wow that really saves subie $hitloads of money! just spend $50k to give all USDM STI's a stupid SCCA card and void their warranty later and save millions
I've read on the sti forums that the subaru dealers will blame anything they can on modifications done to the car. They are also blaming clutch and tranny problems on user abuse. So from what i've read, they seem to be running into the same issues at the dealer. That sucks but its life.
My freind kyle's neighbor bought a evo7 and his mom owns a sti.
I went driving with him in both of them and what I have heard is completly right. While their may be issues regarding quality (which I have never heard of except from this forum) the evo has aspects in driving that I just like more.
He lives in the "boonies" and dirt roads are fun to drive with a awd car, the evo can slide and drift like mad without making you to scared, it has that controlled chaos effect that gives you a rush. The sti just kind of holds on and you just rock. It seems like the car dose the work and you sit back. The evo is a active driving machine. It is a experience to me.
It is no contest a better car to me. Irregardless of these issues I would take it above a sti anyday.
