This website explains the fundamentals of how a differential works and why you need it.

But you forget that Toyota is the worlds most profitable car maker. They made about $1500 in profit for every car sold in the 2003/2004 business year for a total of about $10 billion. Their oprating profit for the first quarter ending june 30 was just over $4 billion. That was for ONE quarter. As such looking at the fact that they have the most money to burn of ANY car maker, they can do what anyone else can do. Add to that the fact that Ford, Ferrari, Honda, BMW, and Daimler all have Formula One teams as well. If they can all crank out high performance cars while running an F1 program, Toyota could do that, plus some...

I don't think the U.S. Evo is that bad, I own one. Consider the U.S.'s strick (and B.S. ) laws, I think Mitsubishi did a good job in transforming it. There's not much different in the power, the main differents are just the 6-speed gear box, AYC, and ACD. Beside, I heard lots of story from Evo owners (Europe and Japan) saying that the AYC and ACD are high-maintainace items. Plus, it not unusual for those part to fail when the car is being push to the limit.

U.S. Evo still performs really good without these parts
Well we were quite expecting it to be a better performer than the 5 to 7, especially the 7. iv testdriven the USDM evo 8 for a local car magazine here in the Philippines and we pitted it against the Evos 5 RS, Evo 6 TME, and Evo 7 RS. ill scan the article and post it here. We featured an Evo 8 for the write-up. We recently did a test for the new article "Lancer Evolution vs. Pajero Evolution". We noticed the growing numbers of Pajero Evolutions in our streets and we were thinking if this would be the end of the Lancer for the Evolution series. So we dropped in an article that will compare both vehicles. I know its silly to compare a Pajero to a Lancer, but with the growing demand now for the Pajero Evolution, we wanted to know what made people shift to the Pajero, and if the Evo 8 will be the last of the Lancers in the Evolution series.
