Excuse me if this is old news to anyone, but in reading an article from Autocar magazine, which was an Evo8 vs STI comparo. I found someting you might be interested in, in reference to the evo they wrote: "I also know that this is definitively the last of the breed. I know,I know: we've been saying this for years, but this time this really is it."
This is the first time I've heard any sort of "official" information in regard to the future of the evo. This is a British mag, I know, but I doubt Mitsu. would make an evo 9 just for the US. Oh well, at least this should increase the re-sale value of the VIII's in years to come.

I remember reading in a Car and Driver mag a couple of months ago that it was official that it will go up till Evo X... then mitsu will change to like a 2 door based rally car or something
....dunno.....But I think that more likely Mitsubishi will make the Evo 9 for US market. 'cause right now they are not doing well, financially, so they must do something to increase their sell. Apparently, Evo is the car that they could make some money out of....atleast from the maintainance.
Anyway, I'm thinking about trading in my Evo for a Celica. Any comments would help me make this decision.

I read somewhere a while back, Autoweek comes to mind, that after the release of the VIII, the Evo in america will be different than what the Japanese will get. Sort of like the how the Honda Accord in America is different than the JDM Accord.
With Mitsu out of SCCA, and with the WRC Lancer not being EVO based, they don't need the EVO for homologation any longer. The only reason to build the EVO is money. Mitsu doesn't have any. They'd either have to turn the EVO into a mass market machine -- lose the extreme wing, the edgy steering, the too-fast-for-granny handling, etc -- or just drop the model.
The auto industry top managers have never quite figured out how to profit on "fringe market" cars ... maybe because the successful ones always create so many copycat competetors - like the STi and the upcoming Focus Cosworth.
Before the WRC04, I'd have said that Mitsu was likely to come out with a Colt EVO -- the Lancer is a bit large for WRC. But the FIA isn't being kind with homologation numbers, so the whole homologation special market may be drying up. Pity.

What's really sad is that the tunable market for Evo will dry up if they stop making these cars. I dont think there is enough market for the tuners to make a profit...now thats really sad.

I bought my EVO to replace a Celica AllTrac Turbo -- because, once it went out of production, it became an "un-vehicle" to Toyota. I even had a Toy dealer tell me there was no such car. He was a bit annoyed when I pointed to one parked out front.
If Mitsu drops the EVO, where are you going to get service? From Mitsu dealer shops trained on entry-market SUVs? Towards the end, the Toy dealer shops were making the Celica worse, rather than better. And I just didn't have the time to do all my own maintenance.
With Toy out of WRC, don't expect to see a "bleeding edge" Celica anytime soon. The VVTi gives the Celica impressive BHP/Litre for a normal breather ... but the better engine is still only 180 horse -- and the mass market, FWD Celica isn't going to get close to the EVO's handling.
I know the celica won't be anywhere near the Evo. But,with the possibility of Mitsu stop the Evo production, the celica will be a lot cheaper to service and maintain. Beside I think the celica with TRD bodykit (action package) looks kindda nice.
Anyway, I saw a pic of Evo IX, it looks like it is base on the Lancer.
