Head unit wiring question

Getting ready to replace the stock head unit with my Premier. I removed the stock head unit and there's a segment of wiring between the stock head unit and the wiring harness connector that's got some red and yellow wires (two red, three yellow, I think) tapped into it. What are these wires for? How do I connect them to my new head unit?

Thumbs up

1st did you buy a separate wiring harness so you don't have to cust facory wires???????

if so just match all the harness wires (should be some diagram or labeling on the wiring/packaging) & remember you won't need the ground wire cuz the brackets will ground the deck. just cap off the extra cables you don't need & remember to go ahead & run your addl cables (rca's 4 amps, sat radio, etc...) now so you won't have to pull the deck later on.

good luck. it'll be easy.

yeah, i believe it's the metra 7001 if my memory serves me right. by the harness, it'll save you a ton of headaches...worth the $10-$15. as far as the other wires, are they in a secondary harness attached to the headunit? or do they go somewhere else... can you see the other end?

Yes, I bought a wiring harness for the head unit.

The other wires are tapped into the wiring between the harness connector and the head unit connector. I've attached a picture. I haven't tried to trace them yet.

Yeah, listen to those guys. Also, I've got a Premier, and if ours are the same size you might need some spacers so it sits just right on the dash. Look into some Neoprene (flat, tough rubber) and cut some squares out. Then screw right through your desired amount (I stacked 3 or 4 per screw, I believe... 4 screws). When all is said and done, the border of the face should snap on nice and snug.

It's the metra 70-7001 harness for all mitsus 1994 and up. On the back of the package there is a wiring diagram to match up to your deck.

Guys, I understand how to wire the head unit to the Mitsu harness. That's not the problem. The problem is these extra five wires that are tapped in upstream of the harness connector. Look at the picture I posted.

The correct harness has only one yellow wire and one red wire.

OK, nevermind... I'm a doofus. I just realized that the connector on the back of the stock head unit is the same as the one on the wiring harness, so I can just leave the funky segment with the tapped-in wires in place.

Thanks, guys.

yeah, you got it right, just leave that harness connected, and yours will plug into there.

by chance do you have the factory gauge kit below the heater controls?
