Question Taking off Exhaust Manifold

Was wondering what the difficulty of taking off the exhaust manifold is? I've done a bunch of searching and can't seem to find anything. Is is something that you can do with a torque wrench and a weekend? What else needs to be removed to get it all the way off, and how much of the turbo do you need to deal with, if at all.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks guys.

To get the exhaust manifold off you have to remove the downpipe, the O2 housing and then the turbo. After that there are only 8 or so bolts that go to the head. It looks easy from the top, trust me I fell for that myself. If you are mechanically inclined you can do it with some jacks or a lift. I'm not, so I left it to a professional

You have to take out the turbo? That can't be right.

I just took my heat shield off today and was looking at it. There are only 10(?) bolts on top and 4 bolts in the bottom and it should come right off. shouldnt take more than 10 mins.

Although 2 of the bolts on the front(closest to the front of the car) are studs that may not allow you to pull the manifold off? Does anyone know if they are studs or not?

If it is as easy as it looks there shouldn't be a worry.

Just tried this myself the other weekend. It is not as easy as it appears. Those are indeed two studs on the front side of the manifold. Therefore you would have to take the entire turbo, downpipe, and wastegate assembly off to get the manifold off. I broke down and just drilled and tapped the hole for an EGT sensor while the car was running. This is if that is what you were planning to do.

What I did
spray all the bolts first and wait about 1 hour.
remove the two bolts that hold the downpipe to the o2 housing.
Now just remove all the nuts from the manifold for slack, pull it off.
That's it, you don't need to remove anything else.

It's a lot easier to do if you take the radiater out first or your gonna screw the fins up. Did it last weekend to take the head off to do arp's.. If you need help with anything else let me know. x- mechanic, hvac now..

Like Walt said, removing the radiator gives you more space to work with plus you dont want to damage your radiator.
