general question about installing springs in rear

I was trying to install some Tanabe gf210 on my buddy's evo 9 and for some reason we could not get the nut on top of strut assembly to come loose. Everytime we tried to loosen it the shaft would also spin even when using a vice grip to stop it from spinning. Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove the nut on top of the struts. There are Tien S-tech springs on the car now, any help would greatly be appricated.

you need a spring compressor and lots of muscle with vicegrips...good luck.

spring compressors are available at your local auto parts store.

no you don't need one in the rear. I used it and it was completely useless. The rear springs aren't compressed when you have the rear strut assembly completely off the car. I followed EvoMoto's trick and use a small wrench, very small i forgot the exact number but something like 2mm to 3mm and it worked. It won't work if the edges are rounded off from being stripped using the vice., well it won't work that well...

ok I think you mean use the 2mm wrench on the small rectangular portion above the bolt? We were using the vice grips on the shaft underneath the dust cover, I'll try this and see what happens
