Mine was hard to turn also, one day last winter I turned it and it snapped off and broke the heating controls. I took it to Mitsu and they said dirt gets in the gears of the heater box and gums up the track When that happens they have to replace it. Replacing it includes removing the entire dash. It took Mitsu 2 days to do, luckily it was about a month before my extended warranty expired so it only cost me 300. Mitsu did put the cabin air filter in for free and the service manager said it is a common problem and the filter should keep it from happening again. I wish now I had put the damn filter in back in '04 when I first wanted to..lol
